According to legend, the medicinal properties of white peony were discovered by the famous physician Hua Tuo during the Three Kingdoms period in a very strange situation. To easily identify and avoid confusing medicinal herbs, Hua Tuo planted all kinds of medicinal plants around his house. One day, someone gave him a strange flower, saying that it could be used as medicine, but it was unclear what disease it could cure. Hua Tuo planted it in the corner of the yard next to the window. When spring came, the plant bloomed with very large flowers, with pure white petals, fragrant like roses. Hua Tuo tried picking the flowers to make a drink, but did not notice any strange taste. He picked the leaves and then picked the branches to try, but also did not discover anything special. Thinking that although this flower was beautiful, it could not be used to cure diseases, Hua Tuo did not pay attention to the plant for several years.

One time, Hua Tuo's wife suddenly had a stomachache and a lot of bleeding. She took all kinds of medicine but it didn't help. She immediately went to the garden and dug up the roots of a peony plant to boil and drink. After only half a day, the stomach pain was gone and the bleeding stopped. When he heard his wife tell him what had happened, Hua Tuo was very grateful and said: Thank you, madam, for awakening me. If it weren't for you, I would have missed out and lost this precious medicine. After that incident, Hua Tuo continued to experiment and discovered that, in addition to its pain-relieving and hemostatic effects, the roots of a peony plant also had the effect of nourishing the blood and could be used to treat many gynecological diseases. The strange flower was originally called "white peony". When he compiled the book Qing Nang Jing, Hua Tuo added the word "medicine", so from then on the plant was called "white peony medicine".
