Uses of Coptis chinensis

Shennong's Herbal Classic states: Coptis chinensis is the most bitter herb among oriental medicines. Its roots and stems contain about 7% berberine essence. Oriental medicine believes that Coptis chinensis is a bitter herb with a cold nature. The bitter taste of Coptis chinensis is damp, the cold nature eliminates heat, so Coptis chinensis has the effect of clearing heat and eliminating dampness, especially the effect of clearing fire in the heart and stomach meridians. Clinically, Coptis chinensis is used to treat heat-related diseases, damp-heat symptoms, diarrhea caused by enteritis, and dysentery caused by bacteria, the main cause of which is damp-heat in the large intestine. From ancient times to the present, doctors have believed that Coptis chinensis is the best medicine to treat dysentery.
