CHRONIC COUGH
Cough is a respiratory condition and a physiological response of the body when the respiratory tract is inflamed, irritated by foreign objects, or due to cold weather, among other causes. One of the most impactful types of cough on health and daily life is a persistent cough that does not resolve. If you suffer from this condition, you should address it promptly, as prolonged cases can become chronic, making it very difficult to cure and potentially leading to other serious respiratory complications.

Causes of Persistent Cough and Treatment Options
There are many reasons why you may suffer from a persistent cough that doesn’t resolve. For example, cold weather, weakened immunity, or poor oral hygiene can lead to conditions like sore throat or other respiratory infections, causing prolonged coughing. Additionally, not applying the correct methods to eliminate the cough can worsen the issue. Understanding and avoiding these causes can boost your body’s immunity, making it easier and faster to overcome the condition.
TYPES OF MEDICATIONS USED TO TREAT COUGH
- Antibiotics: For coughs caused by bacterial infections.
- Expectorants and mucolytics: To loosen and clear phlegm.

Treating Dry and Productive Cough with Traditional Medicine
Dry cough and cough with phlegm are often symptoms of respiratory conditions such as sore throat, tonsillitis, or bronchitis. These conditions can affect all ages but are particularly common in children. A major drawback of Western medicine is that many drugs are unsuitable for young children and often cause unwanted side effects. Overcoming these limitations, traditional Eastern medicine remedies for dry and productive coughs are increasingly trusted, especially by parents.
The principle of Eastern medicine focuses on balancing yin and yang, addressing the root cause of the disease to achieve thorough, effective results while minimizing recurrence. Cough remedies must address both symptoms (relieving cough, reducing inflammation, and soothing throat swelling) and the root causes (liver, kidney, lungs, and vital energy).
An ancient formula including Can khương (dried ginger), Mạch môn (Ophiopogon root), Nhục quế (cinnamon bark), Khoản đông hoa (Tussilago flower), Tang bạch bì (mulberry root bark), Ngũ vị tử (Schisandra fruit), and Đại táo (jujube) has been used by traditional healers to treat chronic coughs. This formula works by tonifying qi, clearing phlegm, opening the lungs, and suppressing cough. Specifically:
- Mạch môn: Nourishes yin, benefits the stomach, and promotes fluid production.
- Can khương: Warms the body, disperses cold, and relieves cough and asthma caused by cold-dampness.
- Nhục quế: Stimulates circulation, enhances respiration, and treats asthma and cough.
- Khoản đông hoa: Warms the lungs, lowers qi, dissolves phlegm, and stops cough.
- Tang bạch bì: Nourishes the liver and kidneys.
- Đại táo: Tonifies the spleen and stomach, boosts qi, and nourishes blood.
MTA Bổ Phế Syrup, designed for cough relief, is produced using this ancient formula on a GMP-compliant production line. It helps tonify the lungs, reduce cough, clear phlegm, soothe sore throat, and relieve hoarseness. It is highly suitable for people with diabetes, sore throat, bronchitis, cough, or hoarseness. The product is licensed by the Ministry of Health and distributed nationwide.

WHAT TO EAT WHEN YOU HAVE A COUGH?
According to advice from healthcare experts, the following foods are highly beneficial for those struggling with coughs:
- Soups, thin porridge, and milk: These foods contain sufficient water, are soft, easy to swallow, and digest, while still providing essential nutrients for patients.
- Soft or minced beef and pork, and green or red vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, carrots, and tomatoes. These meats and vegetables are rich in Vitamin A, zinc, and iron, which support the recovery process.
- Fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, pineapples, guavas, mangoes, and apples, which are high in Vitamin C, help boost immunity and detoxify the body to fight illness. These fruits should be consumed about 1 hour after meals, as eating them on an empty stomach may harm the stomach.
- Shellfish such as clams and mussels, which contain zinc, also help enhance the body’s immunity.
- When coughing, patients can use mint-flavored cough lozenges to clear the throat and nose. However, these should not be overused in cases of sore, red, or inflamed throats.
- Honey with a few slices of lemon or kumquat is highly recommended for those with coughs or sore throats. After breakfast, patients can take 1–2 teaspoons of honey or drink a glass of warm water mixed with honey and lemon. This mixture is excellent for its antibacterial properties and relieving coughs.
