CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, AND SAFE TREATMENT METHODS
WHAT IS CHRONIC COUGH?
Everyone has experienced coughing — it’s not always harmful. In fact, coughing is an important reflex that helps expel mucus, toxins, foreign objects, and infections from the respiratory tract.
However, when a cough becomes chronic, it may be a sign of an underlying condition, not only in the respiratory system but potentially from other organs as well.
That’s why identifying the root cause of the cough is crucial. Using cough medicine improperly can prolong the illness and lead to more serious complications.
Acute cough: lasts no more than 3 weeks
Subacute cough: lasts 3–8 weeks
Chronic cough: defined as lasting more than 8 weeks

TREATING CHRONIC COUGH ACCORDING TO TRADITIONAL EASTERN MEDICINE
According to Traditional Eastern Medicine (TEM), chronic cough is often associated with dysfunction in the internal organs (zang-fu organs). The root of the disease may lie in the Lungs themselves or other organs functionally connected to the Lungs. Chronic cough is considered a complex condition that requires time to fully recover. The fundamental treatment principles in TEM include:
Strengthening the Spleen/Kidneys, nourishing the Lungs, and balancing the Liver to regulate the function of the Lungs and related organs
If internal pathogens arise due to organ dysfunction, they must be cleared using methods like: clearing heat, reducing fire, eliminating dampness, and transforming phlegm
Soothing the throat and airways, and restoring the secretion of healthy physiological fluids
A classical herbal remedy — which includes Mulberry root bark (Tang Bai Pi), Licorice (Gan Cao), Kudzu root (Ge Gen), Ophiopogon (Mai Men Dong), Ginseng (Ren Shen), Cinnamon bark (Rou Gui), Poria (Fu Ling), and Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) — has been used by traditional healers to treat chronic cough by tonifying Qi, clearing Lung heat, opening the Lungs, and suppressing cough.
THE FUNCTIONS OF THE INGREDIENTS IN MTA HO SYRUP
Mulberry root bark (Tang Bai Pi): Clears Lung heat, promotes urination, suppresses coughing, and relieves asthma
Licorice (Gan Cao): Moistens the Lungs, relieves cough
Ophiopogon (Mai Men Dong): Moistens the Lungs, nourishes Yin, strengthens the Stomach, generates fluids, clears heat, and alleviates restlessness
Ginseng (Ren Shen): Greatly tonifies the original Qi, generates fluids, calms the mind, strengthens the Spleen, and nourishes the Lungs
Cinnamon bark (Rou Gui): Tonifies Fire, restores Yang, warms the Kidneys and Spleen, promotes blood circulation, and eliminates cold accumulation
Poria (Fu Ling): Promotes urination, drains dampness, strengthens the Spleen, calms the mind, and has sedative effects
Chinese Yam (Shan Yao): Tonifies Yin, nourishes the Stomach, generates fluids, benefits the Lungs, and tonifies the Kidneys, treating Spleen deficiency and relieving thirst
