Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease, or tremor paralysis, reflects the degeneration of the nervous system. People over 50, particularly men, are the most likely to develop this disease. When someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s, they face numerous difficulties in daily life activities and often experience depression.
1. Parkinson’s Disease According to Modern Medicine
Parkinson's disease is caused by the degeneration of nerve cells in the substantia nigra in the brain. These cells typically release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps control movement.
The causes of damage can include genetics, environmental factors, toxins, aging, cerebrovascular accidents, or significant blood loss. The result is a reduction in the brain's ability to produce dopamine, and the lack of dopamine leads to the development of this disease.
Nerve cells are highly specialized cells, and once they die, they cannot regenerate. This is the main challenge in treating Parkinson’s disease. Modern medicine addresses the disease mainly with temporary solutions, and finding a permanent cure remains a significant challenge.
In recent years, researchers have been exploring various treatment options for Parkinson’s, such as:
Stem cell transplants into the brain, to help these cells differentiate and produce dopamine.
Implanting small electrical chips and stimulators into the body to stimulate dopamine production.
Using antioxidants like Coenzyme Q-10 for treatment.
Medications to block glutamate, an amino acid that damages nerve cells.
However, these treatments are still largely in the research phase.
1. Parkinson’s Disease According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
The main cause of Parkinson's disease in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is believed to be the weakening of the Liver (Can) blood and Kidney (Thận) Yin due to aging. Weak blood (Huyết) fails to nourish the joints and blood vessels, leading to contraction, stiffness, and tremors. When the Yin is deficient, the Yang becomes excessive, causing internal wind (phong). If this wind combines with dampness (đờm thấp), it obstructs the meridians, leading to tremors.
It can also be caused by suppressed emotions, anger, which damage the Liver (Can). The Liver loses its ability to disperse energy, causing Qi to become stagnant. Qi has the function of promoting blood circulation, so when Qi is blocked, blood stagnates. Stagnant blood cannot nourish the joints, resulting in stiffness, difficulty moving, spasms, and tremors. Poor nutrition, aging, anxiety, fatigue, and weak Spleen (Tỳ) can lead to Kidney Yang deficiency, making it unable to transform fluids in the body, which turn into dampness. This dampness then obstructs the meridians, generates heat, and causes internal wind, which leads to tremors.
Thus, the TCM principle for treating Parkinson's is to tonify the blood, nourish Yin, dispel cold-damp, and benefit the joints. This approach helps the patient become more resilient and better able to resist the disease.
The formula consists of precious herbs such as:
Đảng sâm: Tonifies the middle, benefits Qi, and helps treat weak, tired limbs.
Câu đằng: Clears heat, dispels wind, and helps with spasms and limb contraction.
Kê huyết đằng: Promotes blood circulation, nourishes the blood, and alleviates pain from stiff joints.
Đan sâm: Helps to break blood stagnation, opens channels, and relieves pain.
Huyết giác: Clears blood stasis, opens meridians, and reduces pain.
Trúc nhự: Relieves spasms and calms the body.
Cỏ xước: Treats pain and weakness due to wind-damp conditions.
Tang thầm: Nourishes the blood and dispels wind, especially for tremors.
Chi tử: Aids in reducing internal heat and inflammation.
The mechanism of action for this herbal formula:
Clears heat, cools the blood, and promotes blood circulation, helping detoxify the body and improve blood flow to the nervous system and joints.
Calms the mind, nourishes the Liver and Kidney, and reduces dizziness, tinnitus, and general weakness.
Dispels wind-damp, relieves joint pain, and improves movement.
This herbal medicine, MTA Kê Huyết Đằng, developed by MTA Pharmaceutical Company, has been scientifically researched and is particularly effective for individuals experiencing tremors, spasms, and other symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease.
Product Effectiveness (MTA Kê Huyết Đằng):
Stage 1: Dissolves dampness and cold, and clears the body's accumulated heat. In the early stages of use, patients may experience an increase in tremors, which is part of the process to stimulate blood flow and unblock stagnation.
Stage 2: Calms the mind, nourishes the Liver and Kidney, reduces headaches, and helps with blood circulation. Patients may begin to regain better control over their movements, and symptoms such as tremors and muscle rigidity will improve.
Stage 3: Restores mobility, nourishes the nervous system, and reduces body weakness. During this phase, the patient’s overall health will improve significantly, with clearer mental functioning, reduced stiffness in joints and muscles, and prevention of relapse.

Diet and Lifestyle for People with Parkinson's Disease
Nutrition experts recommend that Parkinson's patients maintain a balanced diet to benefit their health. The balanced diet recommended for Parkinson's patients is as follows:
Eat a variety of foods: One should not rely on a single type of food to get all the necessary vitamins and minerals. If considering taking multivitamins, it's important to consult with a doctor first. Excessive vitamins can be more harmful than deficiencies.
Eat more fiber-rich foods: It’s advised to consume foods that are rich in fiber, such as vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fresh fruits.
Drink plenty of water daily: Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and well-being.
Avoid foods high in saturated fats and cholesterol: These can increase the risk of cardiovascular issues, which is important to monitor for Parkinson's patients.
Avoid foods high in sugar: Excessive sugar can worsen health conditions and affect overall well-being.
Limit salt intake: Excessive salt can lead to high blood pressure and other health complications.
Avoid alcohol: It’s important to limit or avoid drinks with alcohol, such as wine, beer, and spirits.
In addition to a balanced diet, Parkinson's patients should engage in regular exercise. A healthy diet combined with proper physical activity can help maintain an ideal body weight and significantly benefit individuals with Parkinson's disease.
