Allergic Conjunctivitis (Red Eye Disease)
Overview Allergic conjunctivitis, commonly known as red eye disease, is a prevalent condition that occurs when the conjunctiva (the thin membrane covering the white of the eye) is irritated by an allergen.
Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include:
Itchy eyes
Excessive tearing
Eye pain
Redness
Increased eye discharge (gunk)
Conjunctival hyperemia (bloodshot eyes)
Conjunctival edema (swelling)
Patients with allergic conjunctivitis often have coexisting allergic conditions affecting other organs, such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, or atopic dermatitis.
Peak Seasons: The condition is most common in April, May, June, and July, with frequent recurrences during humid weather or just before rain. These periods are when the body, especially in individuals sensitive to weather changes, is more fatigued, and the immune system is weakened, making it easier to contract the disease.
Complications of Conjunctivitis
Corneal ulcers
Vision loss or blindness
Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
Eye pain, burning, blurred vision, or restricted visual field
Recommendations for Individuals with Red Eye Disease
Avoid Allergens: Windy seasons exacerbate allergen exposure, while rainy seasons may reduce allergens like pollen and dust, alleviating symptoms. Avoid early mornings in summer when pollen concentration is high.
Use Personal Items: Use separate towels and personal items at home, school, or work to prevent cross-contamination.
Avoid Rubbing Eyes: Do not rub your eyes, and cover your mouth/nose when sneezing.
Practice Hand Hygiene: Wash hands daily with antiseptic solutions, especially after contact with infected individuals.
Caution with Contact Lenses: Consult a doctor if experiencing eye discomfort while using contact lenses.
Protect Eyes: Wear protective eyewear when outdoors or in environments with smoke, dust, or chemicals.
Boost Nutrition: Increase intake of vitamins A, C, and E to support eye health.
Be Cautious with Cosmetics: Use eye cosmetics carefully to avoid irritation.
Limit Corticosteroid Use: Avoid prolonged or continuous use of corticosteroid-containing products, as they may cause complications such as increased intraocular pressure, cataracts, glaucoma, or predispose to corneal infections.
Traditional Medicine Perspective
In Traditional Vietnamese and Chinese Medicine, allergic conjunctivitis is referred to as “Bạo Phong Khách Nhiệt” (Sudden Wind-Heat Invasion) due to its rapid onset. It is also called Hỏa Nhãn (Fire Eye), Hỏa Nhãn Thống (Painful Fire Eye), Hồng Nhãn (Red Eye), Phong Hỏa Nhãn Thống (Wind-Fire Eye Pain), or Phong Nhiệt Nhãn (Wind-Heat Eye) because of symptoms like swollen, red, and painful eyes.
Principles:
“The eye relies on blood to see.”
“When true yin is depleted, blindness occurs.”
Dry eyes are likened to an oil lamp: “When the oil runs out, the lamp goes out.”
Symptoms:
Dryness and burning sensation in the eyes
Seasonal or recurrent episodes
Mild to severe eye pain, especially with complications
Redness, excessive tearing, and intense itching
Eyelids may stick together upon waking
Temporary blurred vision, which may improve with blinking but can lead to reduced vision if severe
Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
Pain in the eye socket
Affects both eyes
According to Hải Thượng Lãn Ông (the revered Vietnamese physician):
The sclera (white of the eye) is associated with the Lungs (Phế).
The cornea (black of the eye) is associated with the Liver (Can).
The pupil is associated with the Kidneys (Thận).
The canthus (corner of the eye) is associated with the Heart (Tâm).
The eyelids are associated with the Spleen (Tỳ).
When these organs are affected by internal heat combined with external heat toxins, they cause stagnation, leading to swollen, painful, and red eyes. If the heat is not cleared, it can accumulate and become chronic.
Core Principle: The health of the eyes is rooted in the Liver (Can) and Kidneys (Thận). The Liver opens to the eyes, and Liver deficiency leads to reduced vision. Liver heat causes red eyes, tinnitus, and dizziness. Thus, eye diseases fundamentally originate from Liver imbalances.
Traditional Medicine Treatment Approach
Based on Traditional Medicine principles, the teachings of Hải Thượng Lãn Ông, and the traditional formula for “Subacute Conjunctivitis,” MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company has developed a remedy using herbs that clear heat, detoxify, and nourish the Liver and Kidneys to treat symptoms such as swollen, red, hot, or gritty eyes, photophobia, and the sensation of a foreign body in the eye. Key herbs include:
Lonicera japonica (Kim ngân hoa): Sweet, cold, non-toxic; enters the Lung, Stomach, Heart, and Spleen meridians. Clears heat, detoxifies, and treats red, painful eyes.
Phellodendron amurense (Hoàng đằng): Bitter, cold; enters the Heart and Liver meridians. Clears heat, detoxifies, treats inflammation, red eyes with membranes, and contains palmatine for eye pain relief.
Saposhnikovia divaricata (Phòng phong): Sweet, spicy, warm; enters the Bladder, Liver, Lung, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. Dispels wind, treats blurred vision, and clears wind-related symptoms.
Schizonepeta tenuifolia (Kinh giới): Spicy, warm; enters the Lung and Liver meridians. Dispels wind, clears heat, reduces stasis, and treats headaches, blurred vision, and throat swelling.
Vitex negundo (Mạn kinh tử): Bitter, spicy; enters the Liver and Bladder meridians. Clears wind-heat, promotes urination, activates meridians, and treats acute conjunctivitis and red, painful eyes.
Chrysanthemum morifolium (Cúc hoa vàng): Bitter, spicy, warm; enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians. Dispels wind-dampness, clears heat, detoxifies, and improves vision; treats blurred vision, dizziness, red eyes, excessive tearing, and eye pain.
Mentha haplocalyx (Bạc hà): Cooling, spicy; enters the Lung and Liver meridians. Clears wind-heat, relieves rashes, soothes the Liver, and treats wind-heat-related colds, headaches, and red, painful eyes.
