High Liver Enzymes
High liver enzymes is an extremely common condition. According to some unofficial statistics in Vietnam, 6 out of 10 people have elevated liver enzymes. However, the symptoms to help us diagnose the disease are quite difficult, and typically, the clinical manifestations of the disease are very few.
The symptoms of high liver enzymes are very limited. Patients may only experience mild pain in the right lower rib area, a slight bloating in the abdomen, and the appearance of dilated capillaries in the neck or face. In many cases, even with significantly high liver enzyme levels, there may be no clinical symptoms, and the patient may continue with normal daily activities, such as working and studying.
In fact, high liver enzymes refer to enzymes found in liver cells, specifically alanine aminotransferase (ALT). When liver cells die due to aging, a certain amount of liver enzymes is released at a concentration of below 40 U/l. If this level is higher, it indicates that your liver is being damaged.
Causes of High Liver Enzymes
Causes of High Liver Enzymes:
Liver diseases: Whether you have hepatitis A, B, or C, whether mild or severe, these conditions can lead to a sudden increase in liver enzymes. Most cases of elevated liver enzymes due to hepatitis eventually become chronic.
Excessive alcohol consumption: It is widely known that alcohol is extremely harmful to the liver. When consumed, it gradually damages liver cells, leading to elevated liver enzymes. Without taking measures to limit alcohol intake, patients risk developing cirrhosis and liver cancer, conditions that are often untreatable.
Food additives: This is commonly seen in processed foods and canned products. These items contain high levels of preservatives, flavor enhancers, and artificial colors. These substances are difficult for the body to digest and largely accumulate, increasing the strain on the liver and stomach.
Contaminated food: According to Professor and Doctor Nguyễn Khánh Trạch, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Digestive Association, "Toxins in contaminated food aggressively attack liver cells. Through various pathways, this leads to excessive activity of Kupffer cells (immune cells in the liver), causing inflammation that directly damages the liver and increases liver enzymes."
Other medical conditions: Conditions like bile duct problems (such as cholangitis, bile duct stones), liver abscesses, or malaria can also contribute to elevated liver enzymes.
Is High Liver Enzyme Dangerous?
Elevated liver enzymes are a sign of liver damage. If harmful habits such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and eating fatty foods continue, liver cells can be destroyed, leading to liver inflammation, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis.
Measures to Treat High Liver Enzymes
Elevated liver enzymes over a prolonged period can significantly affect health and lead to dangerous complications. Therefore, after undergoing liver function tests, you should apply the following measures to reduce liver enzymes:
Absolutely avoid alcohol: Alcohol is a major cause of elevated liver enzymes and digestive disorders. Stopping alcohol consumption can reduce liver, stomach, and intestinal damage. If possible, avoid all alcoholic beverages. Long-term alcohol use can also lead to nerve degeneration, esophageal mucosal hyperplasia, and an increased risk of digestive tract bleeding.
Use medications correctly: Taking medications in the proper dosage can reduce the risk of liver and kidney damage. Additionally, avoid alcohol and alcoholic drinks while on medication. If liver enzymes are high or you have liver and kidney issues, notify your doctor so they can prescribe localized treatment. Local treatments generally have less of an impact on liver and kidney metabolism compared to oral medications, which can help prevent further liver enzyme elevation.
Exercise daily: Regular exercise can positively affect the liver's metabolic and detoxification functions. It also helps burn fat in the liver and effectively control weight. Aim for 30 minutes of walking daily, or try yoga, swimming, running, or cycling to improve cardiovascular health and lower liver enzyme levels.
Lose weight: If elevated liver enzymes are caused by obesity, you should lose weight as soon as possible. Obesity not only affects the liver but also increases the risk of cardiovascular, bone, and kidney diseases. Avoid extreme weight loss methods, such as fasting, which can cause weakness and fatigue. Instead, follow a balanced diet with less fat and engage in suitable physical activities. For significant weight loss, consult a doctor for a tailored diet and exercise plan.
Build a balanced diet: Nutrition directly affects liver function. For those with high liver enzymes, adopting a healthy eating plan can improve liver health and reduce the risk of other digestive diseases.
Diet tips for people with high liver enzymes:
Increase green vegetables to enhance metabolism and support the liver's detoxifying functions. The fiber and vitamins in greens help control excess fat in the liver.
Include more vitamin C-rich foods like pomegranate, tangerines, grapefruit, strawberries, and oranges. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system, aids in liver cell recovery, and maintains digestive organ function.
Consume antioxidant-rich foods (Omega-3, vitamin B, zinc, Flavonoids) to prevent liver cell degeneration and promote liver function. Examples include salmon, nuts, and fruits.
Drink 2–3 liters of water per day to help detoxify the liver and prevent fat accumulation.
Limit foods high in cholesterol like beef, fried foods, snacks, and fast food.
Replace red meat protein with plant-based protein (e.g., mushrooms, beans) and white meat (e.g., frog, chicken, fish).
Adopt a low-sodium diet and avoid excessive salt, sugar, and flavor enhancers.
Replace animal fats with plant oils like olive oil, almond oil, and coconut oil to help lower cholesterol and liver enzyme levels.
Traditional Medicine: In cases where liver enzymes are high and recovery is difficult, doctors may recommend medications to lower liver enzymes. You can also benefit from herbs known for their liver-supporting properties, such as artichoke, milk thistle, and Cà gai leo.
Rather than relying on temporary measures, it's better to consult with traditional medicine to ensure long-term, sustainable results. Compared to Western medicine, traditional remedies are considered safer and have a higher success rate in treating elevated liver enzymes.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment typically follows three approaches:
Heat in the Liver and Spleen Dampness: Treatment focuses on clearing heat and removing dampness.
Liver Stagnation and Spleen Deficiency: Treatment focuses on soothing the liver and strengthening the spleen.
Liver Yin Deficiency: Treatment focuses on nourishing liver Yin.
The formula includes valuable herbs such as Diệp Hạ Châu, Cà Gai Leo, Đương Quy, Sinh Địa, Actiso, Bạch Thược, and Xuyên Khung, which have been used for centuries to lower liver enzymes, enhance liver function, and protect the liver. Specifically:
Cà gai leo: Expels wind and dampness, detoxifies, and is used to treat cirrhosis.
Diệp hạ châu: Detoxifies, clears inflammation, disperses blood stasis, and improves circulation. Used for liver disorders.
Bạch thược: Calms the liver, relieves pain, and nourishes the blood.
Sinh địa: Nourishes Yin, clears heat, and generates blood.
Artichoke: Strengthens the liver.
Combining these approaches, MTA Pharmaceutical has produced the MTA Mát Gan product, which helps with detoxifying, protecting, and enhancing liver function. It is especially beneficial for those with liver dysfunction, cirrhosis, high liver enzymes, or hepatitis, as well as individuals with yellow skin, itching, or poor appetite due to liver problems. It is also helpful for people who drink a lot of alcohol or use medications that harm the liver.
