Western Medicine Treatments for Bronchitis
Many patients mistakenly believe that antibiotics are the only way to completely treat bronchitis. However, this is a misconception, as antibiotics are only effective in cases of bronchitis caused by bacteria.
Some medications commonly prescribed by doctors for bronchitis include:
Expectorants: Help thin mucus and facilitate its expulsion during coughing.
Anti-inflammatory drugs containing corticosteroids, available in oral, inhaled, or nebulized forms.
Antibiotics: Prescribed based on the patient’s condition and medical history. Common antibiotics include ceftriaxone, augmentin, benzylpenicillin, etc.
Antiviral drugs: Typically used for influenza A virus infections.

Supporting Bronchitis Treatment Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Principles
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), bronchitis falls under the categories of "Khái thấu" (cough) and "Đàm ẩm" (phlegm-dampness). According to TCM, external causes of the disease are primarily due to exposure to the six pathogenic factors (lục dâm), such as wind-cold or wind-heat. These factors cause stagnation of lung qi, impairing the lung's function of regulating the ascent and descent of qi, resulting in coughing and excessive phlegm. Additionally, in autumn, dryness (táo tà) often invades the lungs from the external environment, damaging the lung's fluids and causing throat irritation and dry cough.
According to TCM, internal causes are often related to the weakened function of three organs: the lungs, spleen, and kidneys. Cold-dampness damages the spleen, leading to phlegm production, which causes coughing and excessive phlegm. Alternatively, heat accumulation in the stomach and intestines can damage the lungs, leading to yin deficiency in the lungs and kidneys. This results in damage to both qi and bodily fluids, causing coughing and phlegm production.
