Sore Throat, Hoarseness
Who is at risk of hoarseness?
Hoarseness is a very common condition, with an estimated one-third of the world's population experiencing hoarseness at least once in their lifetime.
Hoarseness can occur in both adults and children. However, people who frequently use their voice, such as teachers, singers, and coaches, are at higher risk of developing hoarseness.
Additionally, individuals who suffer from colds, sore throats, and coughs are often prone to laryngitis, which also causes hoarseness. Hoarseness can also result from a functional disorder that does not involve any structural damage to the vocal cords.
Causes of Hoarseness
Some of the most common causes of hoarseness include:
Talking too much or too loudly: Prolonged talking, shouting, or singing at high pitches can lead to hoarseness.
Age: As people age, the vocal cords undergo degeneration, losing elasticity and vibrational ability, leading to hoarseness.
Alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol intake can also cause hoarseness.
Cold, sore throat, cough, sinus infection: When you have a cold, cough, sore throat, or sinus infection, hoarseness may occur but usually disappears once the illness subsides.
Laryngitis: Conditions such as allergies, colds, or upper respiratory infections can cause inflammation and swelling of the vocal cords, resulting in hoarseness.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): When stomach acid rises excessively into the throat, it can cause laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), which damages the larynx and causes hoarseness.
Cysts and polyps: Non-cancerous cysts or polyps on the vocal cords can make the voice hoarser.
Vocal cord paralysis: Paralysis of the vocal cords can lead to hoarseness. This can be caused by injury, thyroid cancer, infections, multiple sclerosis, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease.
Laryngeal cancer: Persistent hoarseness for more than three weeks that does not improve with medication could be a symptom of laryngeal cancer.
Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP): This condition causes benign tumors to grow in the airways, leading to hoarseness, with a high risk of recurrence.
Breathing difficulty or voice disorders due to muscle tension: Excessive tension in the muscles around the larynx can impede the proper functioning of the vocal cords.
Types of Hoarseness
Hoarseness can be divided into two types:
Acute hoarseness: This type of hoarseness is caused by conditions like acute laryngitis, viral or bacterial infections, allergies, swelling of the vocal cords, chemical irritants, or overuse of the voice.
Chronic hoarseness: Chronic hoarseness often arises from causes like GERD, neurological disorders, chemical exposure, smoking, or occupational voice strain (e.g., teachers, salespeople, MCs, singers).
What to take for Hoarseness?
Treating hoarseness can help restore balance to your life and prevent respiratory complications. Doctors will provide tailored treatment plans depending on the individual case.
Western Medicine Treatment
Western medicines help reduce inflammation and combat infection effectively. Depending on the condition and individual response, doctors may prescribe different treatments for hoarseness. Common medications include:
Antibiotics: If hoarseness is due to an infection, antibiotics like Gentamicin, Amikacin, and Cephalothin may be prescribed.
Corticosteroids: These may be administered through a throat spray to alleviate pain, discomfort, and hoarseness. However, corticosteroids can cause side effects, so it is crucial to follow the doctor's instructions carefully.
Saline solution: Gargling with saline solution daily can soothe the throat and reduce irritation, helping to relieve sore throat and hoarseness.
Other medications: Depending on the case, doctors may prescribe additional medications, such as cough medicine, nasal decongestants, or expectorants to relieve symptoms.
Most cases of hoarseness improve with treatment over time. However, chronic hoarseness may have undesirable side effects if medication is used for prolonged periods.
Traditional Medicine Support in Treating Hoarseness
Using traditional medicine to treat hoarseness is considered a safe and effective method. Traditional remedies not only improve symptoms but also enhance overall health. Among them, the following herbal remedy has been used to treat sore throats and hoarseness:
Lo Han Guo (Momordica grosvenorii): It helps to moisten the lungs, relieve the throat, quench thirst, suppress coughing, and eliminate phlegm. It also boosts the immune function of the body’s cells.
Platycodon (Cát cánh): It clears the lungs, expels phlegm, and helps toxic pus to break down. It is beneficial for people with asthma, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, foul-smelling phlegm, sore throats, and hoarseness.
Licorice (Cam thảo): It is a potent detoxifier.
The essential elements of the herbal remedy in MTA Thanh Phế Trà, produced by MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company, help clear the lungs, reduce coughing, reduce phlegm, alleviate sore throats, and treat hoarseness caused by prolonged coughing. MTA Thanh Phế Trà is highly effective for individuals with hoarseness caused by weather changes, dry cough, sore throat, or hoarseness due to excessive coughing.
