Chronic Laryngitis
Laryngitis is a result of a cold or respiratory tract infection. It causes symptoms such as hoarseness, loss of voice, and has a significant impact on the health and daily life of the patient.
Identifying Causes of Acute and Chronic Laryngitis
Weather Changes: Sudden temperature differences between the environment and the body can irritate the throat lining, causing both acute and chronic laryngitis.
Viral Laryngitis: The throat is considered the gateway for both food and air, making it highly susceptible to viral infections. Therefore, respiratory infections can become widespread during the summer, with viruses accounting for 60-80% of causes of acute laryngitis, particularly flu viruses A and B.
Bacterial Laryngitis: Common causes of both acute and chronic laryngitis include pneumonia-causing bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Among these, the most dangerous are group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Klebsiella, Pfeiffer, etc.
Fungal Laryngitis: Mold spores in the air can weaken the throat lining, leading to both acute and chronic laryngitis.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Causing Laryngitis: Stomach acid that refluxes into the throat can cause irritation, leading to swelling, itching, and inflammation in the larynx.
Other Causes of Laryngitis
Inhalation of Toxic Fumes: Smoke, chlorine, ammonia, acids, etc., are considered the leading causes of laryngitis.
Allergic Reactions: Certain allergens such as pollen (from species like rubber flowers, jasmine, and wolf flowers), spicy foods, etc., can irritate the throat lining, leading to laryngitis.
Predisposing Factors: People with weak immune systems are more susceptible to both acute and chronic laryngitis compared to those who are healthy.
Western Medicine for Laryngitis Treatment
Some types of Western medicine commonly used to treat laryngitis include:
Antibiotics: Beta-lactam antibiotics such as Amoxicillin, Taxetil in tablet or syrup form, with dosage based on body weight, help suppress and inhibit the growth of bacteria causing chronic laryngitis.
Anti-inflammatory Medications: Corticosteroids (inhaled), such as Solumedrol and Depersolone, reduce swelling and edema caused by laryngitis.
Lozenge Medications: These help soothe the throat and relieve pain associated with acute laryngitis.
However, when using Western medicine for laryngitis treatment, patients should follow the doctor's instructions and must not self-prescribe.
Traditional Remedies for Laryngitis Treatment
Traditional remedies often include fresh lemon slices, fresh turmeric, and rock sugar steamed together, to be taken several times a day. Other herbs such as wild mint, honey, kumquat, ginger, perilla, mugwort, and peppermint are also effective in treating acute laryngitis.
Managing Laryngitis by Adjusting Lifestyle
In addition to medication, to achieve the best results in treating both acute and chronic laryngitis, patients should pay attention to the following:
Limit Talking: One of the most important things in treating chronic and acute laryngitis is to refrain from speaking to allow the vocal cords to heal.
Eliminate Laryngitis Triggers: Avoid factors that cause laryngitis, such as alcohol, tobacco, infections, and acid reflux.
Keep the Throat Warm and Clean: It's especially important to maintain hygiene and warmth in the throat, especially when living in polluted environments.
Supplement with Vitamins and Fresh Fruits: Eating a lot of fresh fruits and vitamin-rich foods helps prevent and treat laryngitis effectively.
Supporting Laryngitis Treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the main cause of laryngitis is the invasion of cold and wind, which leads to an accumulation of toxins that severely damage the throat. To treat laryngitis, it’s necessary to use remedies that clear heat, detoxify, and promote healing of the throat area while preventing recurrence.
Traditional herbal formulas for laryngitis are often composed of a blend of herbs like Mentha, Jujube, Poria, Fangji, Ginger, and Licorice. These remedies focus on resolving phlegm, dispelling cold, supporting the lungs, spleen, and kidneys, and effectively treating laryngitis while preventing recurrence.
Mentha: Primarily used to treat laryngitis, cough, hoarseness, and voice loss.
Jujube: Sweet in taste and warm in nature, it affects the spleen and stomach meridians. It helps tonify the spleen, strengthen qi, and nourish vital fluids.
Poria: Sweet and bland in taste, neutral in nature, it affects the heart, lung, kidney, spleen, and stomach meridians. It has the effect of promoting urination, removing dampness, tonifying the spleen, and calming the mind to treat palpitations and insomnia.
Fangji: Helps expel wind-heat, regulate qi, and eliminate phlegm. It is mainly used to treat phlegm congestion in the lungs that leads to wind-heat symptoms like cough and wheezing.
Ginger: Spicy in taste, warm in nature, and affects the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It has the effect of dispersing wind, expelling cold, warming the middle, resolving phlegm, promoting fluid metabolism, and detoxifying.
Licorice: Moisturizes the lungs and relieves cough.
The MTA Thanh Quản product is derived from the traditional formula mentioned above, helping to expel wind-cold. It supports the treatment of individuals with hoarseness, voice loss, excessive phlegm, sore throat, laryngitis, pharyngeal tonsillitis, and tonsil inflammation. The product is approved by the Ministry of Health and is available nationwide.

Treatment Plan for Acute and Chronic Laryngitis
7-10 days: Reduction of symptoms such as throat irritation, cough, and fever associated with acute and chronic laryngitis.
2-3 weeks: Decrease of 70-80% in symptoms of swelling and inflammation caused by acute and chronic laryngitis.
2-3 months: Restoration of laryngeal function and prevention of recurrence.
Dietary Recommendations for Laryngitis Patients:
For individuals with laryngitis, maintaining an appropriate diet is crucial. Eating foods that irritate the inflamed larynx can worsen the condition and make it harder to heal. Patients should drink plenty of warm fluids and consume soft, easily swallowable foods to prevent further damage to the throat mucosa and support faster recovery.
Additionally, it is advisable to avoid spicy, oily, cold, and hard foods, as these can irritate the throat and worsen the condition.
