What is depression? Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by mood disturbances. It occurs due to dysfunction in brain activity caused by psychological factors that lead to abnormal changes in thinking, behavior, and personality.
Women are more likely to experience depression than men (2 women for every 1 man), and it can occur at any age, particularly in adulthood. The prevalence of depression is on the rise, with the World Health Organization estimating that approximately 850,000 people die each year due to suicide related to depression. It is a common illness globally. However, only about 25% of individuals diagnosed receive timely treatment.
Depression is responsible for over 50% of suicides, and its causes vary but are most prevalent among those facing unemployment, bankruptcy, divorce, etc.
Depression is a well-known condition that can be completely treated, so it is important to seek medical attention and timely treatment.
Causes of Depression Depression can be caused by the following factors:
Endogenous (unclear cause): There are many theories suggesting genetic factors, autoimmune factors, living conditions, and societal influences, but the exact cause remains unclear.
Stress-induced depression: This can be triggered by pressures from work, family, children, bankruptcy, or sudden events such as the loss of a loved one or financial loss.
Depression related to diseases or injuries: Certain medical conditions or brain injuries can directly impact the brain and contribute to depression.
Depression of unknown origin: In some cases, depression occurs without a clear cause.
Symptoms of Depression Depression manifests with the following symptoms:
Depression Symptoms
Depressed mood: This is reflected in the patient’s facial expression: sadness, sorrow, dejection, and monotony in the eyes, with reduced or absent wrinkles. The depressive mood is very persistent, leading to feelings of sadness, hopelessness, pessimism, and a loss of trust in life.
Loss of interest or previous hobbies: The patient feels heavy, tired, unwilling to work, and moves sluggishly. They always feel they lack the strength to do even light work, and they stop caring about their surroundings, including their children playing. They often believe they have lost all their previous interests, including sexual desire. Both men and women may experience sexual dysfunction, such as frigidity in women or erectile dysfunction in men.
Sleep disturbances: Insomnia is the most common symptom, affecting 95% of patients with depression. The patient feels restless and has trouble falling asleep, even when feeling very sleepy. They wake up earlier than usual. A person is considered to have insomnia if they sleep less than 2 hours less than usual. Patients may stay awake for days, leading to physical exhaustion.
Loss of appetite, weight loss, or occasional weight gain: Depressed patients often lose interest in eating and may stop eating altogether, resulting in weight loss. Some may have an increased appetite, eating more than usual, leading to weight gain.
Fatigue, reduced concentration, and energy: The patient frequently complains of fatigue without an obvious cause, experiences difficulty focusing, and thus has a decline in work performance. The fatigue is often worse in the morning, and they lose interest in everything. In severe cases, patients may be unable to carry out daily activities like shopping, cooking, or washing clothes.
Feelings of worthlessness and guilt: The patient constantly has negative thoughts about themselves, feeling hopeless with no way out, and losing trust in themselves and the future. They may feel guilty towards their loved ones and believe they are inferior to others and useless.
Physical symptoms: Headaches, shoulder and neck pain, palpitations, muscle aches in arms and legs.
Unexplained anxiety, irrational health obsessions, irritability: They are easily angered by others, experience episodes of fear, avoid socializing, and become indifferent to others. They may have high expectations of those around them.
External appearance: The patient may have a disheveled appearance, poor personal hygiene, slow or angry movements, and a sad, monotone voice, all suggesting depression.
Suicidal thoughts or behavior: Most depressed patients think about death, and many have suicidal tendencies. They feel a sense of hopelessness with no escape and may be obsessed with illness. They become discouraged, vulnerable, and gradually start thinking that death would relieve their suffering.
Risk Groups for Depression
After psychological trauma: bankruptcy, loss of money, debts, loss of a loved one, broken marriage, misbehaving children, high work pressure, etc.
Postpartum depression: Occurs in a significant percentage of people a few weeks after childbirth and needs to be detected early.
Students and pupils: High academic pressure, heavy workloads, frequent exams, pressure from parents and teachers.
After physical trauma: Brain injuries, etc.
Preventing Depression
For some unexpected psychological traumas like the loss of a loved one or bankruptcy, provide care, closeness, and support to restore the patient’s trust.
Avoid psychological trauma: Reduce life pressures if possible.
For those showing symptoms of depression, closely monitor the patient, as they may act on suicidal thoughts at any time.
Take the patient to see a psychiatrist for timely diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment of Depression If not detected and treated promptly, depression can lead to suicide, accounting for 50% of all depression cases. Family members should seek psychiatric care for individuals showing symptoms of depression.
Treatment Principles:
Address emotional disturbances.
Prevent recurrence.
Restore function.
Never self-medicate.
Follow prescribed medication regimes, and do not stop taking medicine on your own.
Report any side effects to the doctor for proper adjustments.
There are various antidepressants and mood stabilizers available based on the specific mechanism of the illness. A psychiatrist can prescribe effective medications with high recovery rates and minimal recurrence.
Using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Famous Chinese physicians recommend using herbal treatments for depression, focusing on relieving mental stress. Additional methods like acupuncture, acupressure, and yoga exercises can also be used to calm the mind.
In Western medicine, depression is caused by prolonged stress. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), depression originates from prolonged anxiety, sorrow, and unresolved mental distress that affect psychological states, causing patients to feel exhausted, restless, and helpless. This leads to negative thoughts and severe health consequences.
According to TCM doctors, patients suffering from depression should use herbal treatments with cooling, detoxifying, calming, and mind-soothing properties. Depending on the patient’s condition, specific herbal formulas can help treat the illness effectively.
The Thai Wei Decoction includes: Dang Shen, Phuc Than, Mai Mon, Tian Mon, Câu Đằng, Bối Mẫu, Đởm Tinh, Viễn Chí, and Liên Kiều. Creating a Positive Lifestyle to Prevent Depression
Daily Exercise – A Habit to Effectively Prevent Depression Daily physical exercise not only helps improve overall health, reduce fatigue, and relieve stress from work or study pressures, but it also triggers the production of endorphins — the "happiness hormone" — boosting your energy and enhancing your mood. Just 30 minutes of exercise a day, even a simple walk, can lead to noticeable improvements in your mood. As a result, you will experience better sleep and replenish your energy.
Furthermore, focusing on physical exercise helps eliminate negative thoughts. The goal of your workout and the satisfaction from achieving progress stimulate and boost your mind, increasing self-confidence and giving you a sense of control over your life.

Build a Scientific and Balanced Diet
Drinking enough water every day is one of the habits that helps prevent depression. When your body is dehydrated, you may feel irritable, uncomfortable, sluggish, and unable to focus on studying or working. Additionally, dehydration can be confused with hunger, leading to overeating as your body seeks to compensate. This can result in weight gain and obesity, which negatively impact both your mental and physical health.
Choosing healthy foods and building a balanced diet is crucial for your mental and emotional well-being. A diet high in sugar, fats, processed foods, and street food can worsen your mood, and frequent consumption can lead to health problems like heart disease or even cancer.
To maintain a good mood and a healthy body, it's important to cook with fresh ingredients, ensuring your body gets the nutrients it needs and providing the energy necessary for work and study. Foods rich in fatty acids and amino acids are excellent for brain health. These nutrients are found in everyday ingredients like fish, olive oil, vegetables, and fruits.

Meditation
Meditation is one of the ways to enhance your ability to focus on the present moment, stabilize your mind through controlled breathing. Additionally, it is a practice that helps train the brain, foster positive thinking, and push away negativity. When negative situations arise, instead of avoiding them or being impacted, you will become more open to accepting them and find appropriate solutions.
Meditation is a way to calm the mind, accept and process everything naturally, providing the brain and body with a sense of comfort and safety. It also helps to transform negative thoughts into positive ones, reducing the risk of depression.
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep disorders are considered one of the causes of depression. This is especially true for today's younger generation, who overuse electronic devices, leaving their bodies with insufficient time to rest and inefficient waste elimination.
Sleep disorders cause restlessness at night, difficulty falling asleep, and sometimes waking up in the middle of the night with no ability to continue sleeping. This leads to fatigue and lack of energy for the following day’s activities. Furthermore, poor or insufficient sleep can result in irritability and discomfort.
For those who follow a healthy sleep schedule of 8 hours per night, the immune system will heal and protect itself, the brain will have time to rest, and energy reserves will be replenished for the next day. Therefore, it is important to establish a healthy sleep habit to prevent symptoms of depression. You should set a consistent bedtime and maintain this schedule daily, which will significantly improve the quality of your sleep.
You should take time to connect with your friends, especially those with a positive lifestyle and abundant energy. When you exchange ideas about healthy living and positive matters with others, you will feel more satisfied with your own life and motivated to continue maintaining beneficial habits. This helps build a mental immune system that prevents depression.

Create a Habit of Writing a Journal
Writing is considered an effective way to release your emotions and thoughts. When you're feeling down or facing difficulties in daily life, write down what you're experiencing. This will help lighten your heart and give you time to reflect, assess, and examine whether your actions are reasonable in the given situation. From there, you can learn lessons, gain experience, and continually improve your mindset and attitude to build a better lifestyle.
