BACK PAIN ACCORDING TO TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
Back pain, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a condition of discomfort and soreness in the back due to the stagnation of vital energy (Qi) and blood, heavy physical labor, or musculoskeletal diseases. TCM offers various treatments depending on the underlying cause of the pain. The following article will help you understand the approach to treating back pain in TCM.
TCM's Understanding of Back Pain
In TCM, back pain is classified as a type of "Tý" syndrome. The causes of back pain are thought to be due to the internal organs, such as the liver and kidneys, being weakened, the invasion of wind, cold, and dampness into the body, or heavy physical labor.
Furthermore, TCM also believes that poor posture or musculoskeletal diseases, such as degenerative disc disease or spinal deformities, can also lead to back pain.
Specifically, according to traditional medicine, back pain occurs due to various causes, as detailed below.
Back Pain Due to Kidney Deficiency
In TCM, back pain caused by kidney deficiency is divided into two types: kidney Yang deficiency and kidney Yin deficiency, each with its own symptoms:
Back pain due to kidney Yang deficiency: This typically occurs in the elderly or those with degenerative spinal conditions. Symptoms include dull, aching back pain, fatigue, tinnitus, cold limbs, and pale complexion.
Back pain due to kidney Yin deficiency: This is more common in women and tends to be chronic, causing persistent, dull back pain. Other symptoms often include hot sensations in the hands, feet, and chest, dry mouth, constipation, and yellow urine.
Back Pain Due to Wind-Cold
Wind-cold-induced back pain usually occurs when the weather changes, especially during heavy rainy days. During this time, the joints, especially in the back, are prone to aching and fatigue due to the invasion of cold and dampness.

Back Pain Due to Wind-Cold
In addition to back pain, individuals may experience other symptoms such as a white coating on the tongue, bloating, and cold hands and feet. When moving, such as bending or flexing, you will feel more pain, with tight and inflexible muscles.
Back Pain Due to Blood Stasis
After a collision or injury, if you experience back pain, it is called blood stasis-induced back pain. Alternatively, if you overexert yourself, causing blood to stagnate internally, the back will ache in a piercing, needle-like manner.
This type of back pain is typically localized in one specific area, and movement, bending, or stretching becomes difficult.
Other Causes of Back Pain in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
In addition to the above causes, back pain may occur due to internal conditions such as kidney stones, spinal spurs, herniated discs, or spondylitis. These diseases can present with a variety of symptoms.
Therefore, when experiencing back pain, patients should not be complacent but should consult a specialist for examination and diagnosis.
Treatment Principles for Back Pain According to TCM
The primary treatment principle for back pain in TCM is to help the body circulate and regulate Qi and blood, release areas where blood is blocked, and nourish the internal organs such as the liver and kidneys. This approach helps to alleviate back pain quickly.
Supporting Back Pain Treatment in TCM
TCM offers many methods for treating back pain, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, and acupressure.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Formula for Back Pain
Depending on the cause and condition, TCM will prescribe different herbal remedies. For acute back pain caused by heavy lifting or poor posture (trauma-induced pain), the cause in TCM is believed to be Qi stagnation and blood stasis. The herbal formula includes precious ingredients such as Tô Mộc, Nga Truật, Uất Kim, Ngải Diệp, Cỏ Xước, Quế Chi, Cát Căn, Bạch Thược, Trần Bì, and Cam Thảo which help activate blood circulation, dissolve stasis, relax tendons, and alleviate pain.
In particular:
Nga Truật: Helps move Qi, break up blood stasis, and promote digestion.
Ngải Diệp: Helps eliminate wind-cold and dampness, reducing pain and treating nerve pain and rheumatism.
Cát Căn: Treats muscle stiffness caused by wind-heat or pain in the shoulders and neck.
Bạch Thược: Treats back and chest pain, and alleviates soreness in the limbs.
Uất Kim: Moves Qi, relieves stagnation, and dissolves stasis, beneficial for back pain and joint stiffness.
Cỏ Xước: Dispels wind, eliminates dampness, and strengthens tendons and ligaments.
Utilizing the essence of these herbal formulas, MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company has developed the MTA Thư Cân Hoạt Lạc product, which helps strengthen tendons and bones, and reduces the symptoms of joint pain caused by rheumatism. It is very effective for individuals suffering from back pain, joint pain, numbness in the limbs caused by rheumatism, and those with osteoarthritis.
