Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease, also known as tremor paralysis, reflects the degeneration of the nervous system's function. People over 50, especially men, are the most likely to be affected by this disease. When suffering from Parkinson's disease, patients face many difficulties in daily activities and may experience depression.
1. Parkinson's Disease According to Modern Medicine
Parkinson's disease is caused by the degeneration of nerve cells in the substantia nigra of the brain, cells that normally produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that controls movement.
The causes of damage can include genetics, environmental factors, toxins, aging, cerebrovascular accidents, and excessive blood loss. As a result, dopamine production in the nervous system is reduced, and a lack of dopamine leads to this disease.
Nerve cells are highly specialized and, once they die, they cannot regenerate, which is a major challenge. Modern medicine currently offers temporary solutions for this condition, but finding a permanent cure remains a difficult issue.
In recent years, many methods have been researched to treat this disease:
Stem cell transplantation into the brain to differentiate into cells that secrete dopamine.
Implanting a chip and small pulse generator into the body to stimulate dopamine secretion.
Using antioxidants like Coenzyme Q-10 for treatment.
Using drugs to block the activity of glutamate, an amino acid that destroys nerve cells.
However, most of these treatments are still under research and have not yet become mainstream solutions.
2. Parkinson's Disease According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM):
The primary cause of Parkinson’s disease is believed to be the influence of aging, resulting in the weakening of Liver blood and Kidney Yin. When the blood becomes deficient, it can no longer nourish the joints and blood vessels, causing stiffness, rigidity, and tremors. When Yin deficiency leads to excess Yang, this imbalance causes internal wind, which can obstruct the channels and result in tremors.
Emotional factors, such as frustration or anger, can also damage the Liver, causing a loss of its function to smooth the flow of Qi, which leads to Qi stagnation. Since Qi is responsible for promoting blood circulation, its obstruction causes blood stasis, which in turn impairs nourishment to the joints and muscles, leading to stiffness, difficulty moving, spasms, and tremors. Additionally, poor nutrition, aging, anxiety, stress, and fatigue may weaken the Spleen and Kidney, leading to further Kidney Yang deficiency. When the Spleen and Kidney are weak, they fail to regulate the body’s fluids, leading to the accumulation of phlegm, which obstructs the channels and can transform into heat, causing internal wind and triggering tremors.
Thus, the main therapeutic principle in TCM for treating Parkinson's disease is to nourish the blood, tonify the Yin, dispelling cold and dampness, and promote joint health. This holistic approach helps strengthen the body’s resistance and flexibility to combat the disease.
Prescription: "Dispel Wind and Treat Spasms"
The prescription uses valuable herbs such as Feng Feng (Wind), Bai Zhi, Tian Ma, Kang Huo, and Sang Shen, which work synergistically to nourish the blood, nourish the Yin, promote blood circulation, tonify the Liver and Kidneys, dispelling wind and dampness, and promote joint flexibility. Diet and Lifestyle for Parkinson's Patients
Nutrition experts recommend that Parkinson's patients follow a balanced diet, which will be beneficial for their health. A balanced diet that is advised for Parkinson's patients includes:
Eat a variety of foods: It's important not to consume just one type of food to meet your vitamin and mineral needs. If you plan to take a multivitamin supplement, you should consult your doctor before using it, as excessive vitamin intake can be more harmful than vitamin deficiency.
Increase fiber-rich foods: Patients should consume plenty of fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fresh fruits. Fiber plays a crucial role in improving digestion and preventing constipation, which is a common issue for Parkinson's patients due to the impact of the disease on the nervous system.
Drink plenty of water each day.
Avoid foods high in saturated fats and cholesterol.
Avoid foods that are high in sugar.
Limit salt intake and avoid foods with excessive salt.
Avoid beverages with high alcohol content such as wine and beer.
In addition to a proper diet, Parkinson's patients should exercise regularly. Maintaining a healthy diet and body weight can have a very positive effect on the condition of Parkinson's patients.
