Traditional Medicine to Relieve Muscle Cramps - Calf Cramps (Vọp Bẻ)
Calf cramps (vọp bẻ) are sudden muscle contractions that cause severe pain in one muscle, preventing further movement. Although cramps can occur in any muscle, they are most common in the calves, thighs, hands, feet, and abdomen. Cramps can be dangerous if you are swimming, sitting near a stove, or driving.
1. Causes of Calf Cramps

Causes of Leg Cramps (Charley Horse)
– Due to a lack of essential micronutrients in the body such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, sodium chloride, or due to excessive sweating. – Due to overuse of muscles, causing lactic acid accumulation in the muscles. – Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance. – Use of certain medications, such as antipsychotic drugs, birth control pills, diuretics, statins, and steroids. – People with diabetes are more likely to experience cramps both day and night due to low potassium, sodium, and magnesium levels in the blood. – Peripheral artery disease reduces blood flow to the legs, making cramps more frequent.
How to Handle Calf Muscle Cramps
– Stretching the leg and toes: Lie on your back, lift the affected leg up to keep it straight, and simultaneously pull your toes towards the inside of your foot. – Massage the calf muscles: Sit cross-legged, bend the painful leg to a 100-degree angle, press down firmly on the heel, gently fold both hands, and use the palms to vigorously tap the cramped calf from top to bottom for 1-2 minutes. – Twist the calf: Sit with the affected leg resting on the healthy leg’s thigh, use both hands to twist, knead, and massage the muscles of the back of the lower leg for 5 minutes. – For elderly individuals, it’s recommended to place a warm water bag on the lower leg before going to bed.
Ways to Control Calf Muscle Cramps Using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
In most cases, occasional muscle cramps are harmless. However, when leg cramps occur frequently, affecting daily life or sleep, it is advisable to consult a doctor to rule out underlying health issues. If necessary, a doctor may prescribe medications to alleviate symptoms.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), muscle cramps fall under the category of “Tý Chứng” (syndrome of muscle contraction), also called “thoái trửu cân” (calf muscle contraction), or “cước chuyển cân” (muscle and tendon cramping). According to TCM theory, the spleen governs the muscles and the movement of the limbs, the liver governs tendons, and the kidneys govern the bones. When internal organs become weak and there is insufficient blood and energy (Qi), problems with the muscles and tendons arise. Cold and dampness can obstruct the circulation of Qi and blood, leading to cramps.
Moreover, the liver stores blood and regulates blood flow. During rest or sleep, the body requires less blood, and it is mostly stored in the liver. When the body is active, the liver sends blood to the entire body. At night, when sleeping, the blood circulation to the muscles decreases, often resulting in cramps.
TCM treats this by nourishing the organs, promoting circulation, and warming the meridians to eliminate cold.
The herbal formula Quế chi phòng khung thang includes various herbs such as: – Bạch thược (Paeonia lactiflora): It has a bitter and slightly astringent taste. It helps to calm the liver, relieve pain, regulate menstruation, stop sweating, nourish blood, and reduce inflammation. – Phòng phong (Ledebouriella seseloides): It helps to expel wind, relieve pain, and stop spasms. – Sinh khương (Fresh ginger): It has a spicy, slightly warm taste. It acts to expel cold, relieve nausea, and aid in digestion. – Cam thảo (Licorice): It has a sweet, neutral taste. It helps to strengthen the spleen, moisten the lungs, and harmonize the effects of other herbs. – Quế chi (Cinnamon twig): It helps to promote sweating, relax muscles, and improve circulation. It is effective for treating cold and damp conditions, as well as joint and muscle pain. – Xuyên khung (Ligusticum wallichii): It helps to promote blood circulation, expel wind, reduce pain, ease muscle spasms, calm the nerves, and lower blood pressure. – Đại táo (Jujube): It nourishes the spleen and stomach, moistens the lungs, and improves blood circulation. It is used for people who are weak or fatigued.
MTA Muscle Relaxing Product is made from the Quế chi phòng khung thang formula. It is produced entirely from natural herbs that help to nourish the kidneys and liver, improve the absorption of calcium and trace minerals, and strengthen the bones and tendons, preventing cramps. This product is suitable for children and adults who suffer from cramps, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and sore muscles.

If You Are Prone to Leg Cramps, It's Important to Change Some Habits to Reduce the Frequency and Severity of Future Cramps:
Maintain a balanced diet, rich in calcium and magnesium.
Avoid sitting in front of a fan or air conditioner.
Keep your feet warm, especially in cold weather.
Always warm up before exercising and stretch after workouts.
Choose proper footwear that supports your feet.
Stay hydrated, and maintain a consistent water intake throughout the day.
Cut down on alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.
Even if you’re busy, regularly stretch your legs, and make sure to do so before going to bed.
Engage in moderate exercise, such as walking or cycling, to strengthen your calf muscles.
Many people have poor sleeping posture, wrapping their blankets too tightly, which can constrict the calves and soles of the feet, making cramps more likely. Loosening the blanket can help create a comfortable space for your feet.
Pregnant women are advised to wear support stockings and elevate their feet.
Older adults are also recommended to sunbathe regularly.
Maintain a relaxed state while working or engaging in physical activity.
Food Recommendations for People with Leg Cramps
People who frequently experience leg cramps should ensure they get sufficient nutrients and opt for fresh foods. Many women suffer from calcium deficiency, which leads to osteoporosis, so consuming more dairy, soybeans, seaweed, and other calcium-rich foods is essential.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), leg cramps are related to poor circulation of Qi (energy) and blood, as well as cold stimulation in the legs. Patients should eat foods that help produce Qi and blood, including: red dates, black fungus, red sugar, liver, lamb, goose, duck, eggs, rabbit meat, sweet potatoes, sesame seeds, glutinous rice, longan, mushrooms, nuts, and leeks.
Foods that are easy to digest should be chosen, and raw or cold foods that hinder the circulation of Qi and blood should be avoided. Additionally, some foods that help dispel cold, reduce dampness, and promote circulation include: chicken, shrimp, snake meat, sea cucumber, bone marrow, carp, squid, taro, celery, mulberry, cherries, starfruit, lychees, chestnuts, walnuts, soybeans, white broad beans, hyacinth flowers, cinnamon flowers, bitter melon, onions, ginger, Chinese wolfberry seeds, cinnamon bark, star anise, and more.
