Rheumatism (Phong thấp)
Rheumatism, also known as "feng te" in traditional medicine, is a condition characterized by pain, swelling, and redness in the joints and muscles of the body. The disease can seriously affect kidney function and increase the risk of lung and heart diseases if not treated in time.
Bệnh phong tê thấp thường xảy ra ở những người cao tuổi và đối tượng trung niên.
What is Rheumatism (Phong Thấp)?
In Western medicine, rheumatism, also known as rheumatism in English, typically refers to pain in the joints and parts of the musculoskeletal system caused by autoimmune disorders.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), rheumatism, or tý chứng, is believed to be caused by a weakened body that allows the invasion of "Wind, Dampness, Heat, and Cold" into the muscles, meridians, and joints. This leads to damage to the heart and blood vessels, causing pain, numbness, and stiffness in the joints and limbs.
Regardless of the definition, the main symptoms of rheumatism remain joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Patients may experience numbness and joint stiffness, particularly in the mornings upon waking. Sometimes, the disease can also affect internal organs.
Causes of Rheumatism
The exact cause of rheumatism has not yet been clearly identified. However, experts suggest that the disease may be caused by certain autoimmune responses, such as:
Genetic factors: Some studies have found that the HLA-DK4 gene is present in 40–71% of people with rheumatism. Additionally, two sensitive genes, PTPN22 and PADI4, are also believed to be linked to the onset of rheumatism.
Infectious factors: Though there is no conclusive evidence, researchers suspect that the invasion of bacteria or viruses into the bone joints may cause rheumatism. Some microorganisms, such as the flu virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and Parvovirus B19, may attack the joints and cause inflammation.
Hormonal changes: Some reports indicate that women are more likely to develop rheumatism than men, especially before or after menopause, due to differences in the levels of sex hormones between genders.
In addition to these factors, rheumatism may also be caused by injuries or pre-existing bone and joint diseases. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking or mental stress, can also contribute to the development of rheumatism.
Symptoms of Rheumatism
Once rheumatism develops, it often leads to various debilitating complications, even with treatment. Therefore, it is important for patients to recognize the clinical symptoms of the disease early to prevent potential complications.
Bệnh phong tê thấp thường gây đau nhức xương khớp và tê bì tay chân.
Here are some common symptoms of rheumatism (Phong Thấp):
Joint pain and stiffness: Typically, joint pain caused by rheumatism does not appear suddenly. The pain is usually persistent, even when the patient is moving or at rest. In addition to pain, swelling may occur in the wrists, hands, fingers, and feet. In severe cases, rheumatism can cause joint stiffness, making it difficult to bend or straighten joints. It can also cause deformities in the fingers, such as "bent flower petals" or "goose neck" deformities.
Subcutaneous nodules: Around 15–25% of people with rheumatism may feel small nodules under the skin, usually about 0.2–0.3 cm in size. These nodules can be found in areas like the heels, elbows, and knees. Sometimes, they may appear in internal organs such as the lungs, heart membranes, or brain.
Morning stiffness: Rheumatism often causes joint stiffness, making it difficult to bend and stretch, especially in the morning after waking up. Patients may have difficulty moving and sometimes cannot carry out routine tasks. Some patients may even struggle to dress themselves or comb their hair.
Reduced secretion syndrome: People with rheumatism may experience symptoms like dry mouth and dry eyes.
In addition to these symptoms, patients may also experience symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, arrhythmia, shortness of breath, anemia, or pain in the hands. If any of these symptoms appear, it is advisable to consult a specialist for health check-ups and appropriate treatment.
Treatment for Rheumatism
Western Medicine Treatment:
Some common medications prescribed for rheumatism include:
Prednisone: A corticosteroid that helps reduce pain and supports the treatment of rheumatism.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These drugs are effective in reducing pain and inflammation, preventing the disease from worsening. Examples include Diclofenac Sodium, Aspirin, etc.
Slow-acting drugs: In some cases where the rheumatism has not been diagnosed, doctors may prescribe slow-acting drugs like Penicillamine, Sulfasalazine, or gold salts.
Immunosuppressive drugs: These drugs suppress the immune system, reducing inflammation and infections. Common medications include Azathioprine (AZA), Methotrexate (MTX), and Co-trimoxazole (CTX).
While Western medications provide immediate pain relief, they do not address the root cause of the disease. Overuse of painkillers may also negatively affect other organs. Therefore, patients may consider using gels or patches as alternatives.
Patients should not self-medicate or take medications without the doctor's prescription. Incorrect use of medication can significantly affect the healing process.
In severe cases of rheumatism with complications, joint replacement surgery may be the most effective treatment. For patients with blood inflammation, dialysis may be recommended to remove inflammation and reduce pain during treatment.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Treatment:
According to TCM, the principle of treating rheumatism is to expel wind, harmonize the blood, eliminate cold, dispel dampness, reduce pain, clear heat, reduce inflammation, calm the mind, and simultaneously nourish the liver and kidneys to strengthen the body’s defense against disease.
Medicinal herbs such as Cẩu Tích, Cốt Toái Bổ, Tục Đoạn, Độc Hoạt, Bạch Chỉ, and Xuyên Khung are used to treat joint pain, weakness, and numbness in limbs caused by rheumatism. For instance:
Xuyên Khung: Helps expel wind and reduce pain, used for rheumatism.
Cẩu Tích: Strengthens the liver and kidneys, enhances tendon and bone health, expels dampness.
Cốt Toái Bổ: Used to treat joint pain.
Tục Đoạn: Strengthens the tendons and bones, useful for back pain.
Độc Hoạt: Expels wind and cold, reduces pain, used for joint pain and stiffness in the limbs.
Based on the essence of this traditional remedy, MTA Pharmaceutical Company has developed MTA Xương Khớp Capsules, which help support liver and kidney health, expel wind, and reduce rheumatic pain. These capsules are highly beneficial for people suffering from joint pain, particularly caused by rheumatism.

Expert Advice for Rheumatism Patients
To quickly combat rheumatism and prevent the disease from recurring, patients should consider the following:
Rest and maintain a well-balanced, nutritious diet, which is the best way to reduce joint pain caused by rheumatism.
Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or consuming other stimulants, as they can exacerbate rheumatism.
Patients with rheumatism should avoid taking cold baths, as this may lower body temperature, affect the circulatory system, and lead to serious complications.
Avoid intense physical activity or overworking, as it can negatively affect joint health.
Perform specific exercises to support rheumatism treatment. These exercises help promote blood circulation, improve the flow of blood, and strengthen the immune system to aid recovery.
Maintain a balance between work and life. Avoid overworking and always keep a relaxed mindset.
When experiencing symptoms of rheumatism, quickly schedule an appointment with a specialist to undergo a thorough examination and receive appropriate treatment.
In conclusion, rheumatism is a typical joint disease that tends to increase, particularly in middle-aged and elderly individuals. This condition not only affects joint function but also weakens the immune function of many other organs. Therefore, patients should promptly seek examination and treatment to effectively manage and overcome the disease.
