Osteoarthritis is a common joint condition that not only causes pain and limits mobility but also negatively affects the patient’s quality of life. Early intervention and treatment can help manage symptoms, prevent serious complications, and maintain joint function for many years.
Osteoarthritis can lead to serious complications such as:
Joint stiffness
Limited mobility, making walking difficult
Joint deformities, such as twisted or crooked limbs
Muscle atrophy
Paralysis, disability, and loss of ability to work
Painful and movement-limiting symptoms of osteoarthritis
Depending on the stage of the disease, patients may experience different symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Early stage: Pain caused by osteoarthritis is usually mild and dull, not yet severe. Many people mistake it for joint fatigue or pain due to physical activity or overwork.
– Joint pain occurs when the patient moves or suddenly changes position – The pain is localized in the affected joint – A cracking or grinding sound may be heard in the joint during movement
Advanced stage: Pain becomes more intense and may be accompanied by joint complications if not properly treated.
– Persistent and sudden pain in the affected joint – Swelling and inflammation in the degenerated joint area – Joint deformity or joint effusion may also occur

Causes of Osteoarthritis
There are many causes of joint degeneration, with the following being the most common:
Natural aging process: As people age, the degeneration process accelerates. Cartilage cells lose the ability to regenerate, becoming weak and less elastic.
Congenital factors: Some individuals are born with deformities that alter the normal pressure distribution in joints and the spine, placing excessive stress on the joints and leading to early degeneration.
Genetics: People with a genetic predisposition to early aging or weak bones and joints inherited from their parents are at higher risk of developing osteoarthritis.
Secondary deformities: Bone and joint diseases, injuries from accidents, or occupational stress can damage joints and lead to degenerative complications.
Obesity: Excessive weight gain places heavy pressure on joints, accelerating cartilage wear and tear.
Hormonal factors: Hormonal imbalances, such as decreased estrogen during menopause or conditions like diabetes and osteoporosis, also increase the risk of osteoarthritis.
Treatment Methods for Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis should be detected and treated as early as possible to improve the chances of joint function recovery. Currently, common treatment methods include Western medicine, traditional Eastern medicine, and folk remedies.

Western Medicine Treatment for Osteoarthritis
Western medicine focuses on relieving pain, relaxing muscles, reducing inflammation, and decreasing swelling in the affected joints to improve joint mobility. The use of painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anti-edema medications is common.
In severe cases with complications, doctors may recommend surgical interventions, which include: preventive surgery, conservative surgery, or joint replacement surgery. However, surgery is often costly and carries certain risks.
Additionally, physical therapy using high-frequency waves, heat, or electrical stimulation can help relieve pain and support treatment.
Eastern Medicine Supportive Treatment for Osteoarthritis
According to traditional medicine, osteoarthritis falls under the category of “Tý syndrome,” which refers to stagnation and blockage in the meridians and blood flow. This leads to joint pain, fatigue, and physical weakness.
Treatment in Eastern medicine focuses on the following principles:
– Clearing meridians and promoting circulation of qi and blood – Dispelling heat, wind, cold, and dampness – Strengthening the body and immune system – Nourishing the liver and kidneys, supporting bones and joints – Relieving bone and joint pain
The herbal formula Thang Dâm Dương Hoắc includes valuable medicinal herbs such as Epimedium (Dâm dương hoắc), Clematis root (Uy linh tiên), Xanthium (Thương nhĩ tử), Cinnamon twig (Quế chi), and Szechuan lovage (Xuyên khung). This combination helps dispel wind and dampness, promote blood circulation, and strengthen tendons and bones.
Key ingredients and effects:
– Xuyên khung: dispels wind, relieves pain; used for rheumatism and aching joints – Dâm dương hoắc: nourishes the liver and kidneys, strengthens bones and tendons, dispels wind-damp – Uy linh tiên: reduces pain, relieves numbness, joint swelling, bone pain, and is effective for arthritis – Thương nhĩ tử: treats joint pain, limb numbness, and neuralgia – Quế chi: used for joint pain, neuralgia, and muscle stiffness due to cold
Application of this traditional formula, MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company has developed the product MTA Xương khớp, which helps strengthen tendons and bones. It supports the reduction of joint pain symptoms caused by arthritis and osteoarthritis. The product is especially beneficial for individuals suffering from joint pain, arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
