XUYÊN KHUNG – THE HOLY HERB FALLEN FROM THE BLUE SKY
The story goes that when the famous physician Sun Simiao was with his disciples in the Thanh Thành mountains (in Tứ Xuyên Province), they saw a flock of white cranes playing together. Suddenly, the young cranes cried out in distress as they saw their mother crane suddenly collapse, her neck drooping and her legs trembling. They approached and realized that the mother crane was suffering from a serious illness. The next morning, Sun Simiao and his disciples returned to check on the crane, and they could still hear the mother crane groaning in pain. A day later, when they returned to the forest, they no longer heard any cries. At that moment, they saw that the mother crane's neck had risen, and they observed several white cranes flying high in the air, dropping small white flowers and a few leaves resembling carrot leaves. Several days later, the mother crane recovered from her illness. Sun Simiao and his disciples continued their observations and discovered that these cranes often flew to an old cave, where the healing plants were found.
This is the story behind the famous herb Xuyên Khung (Ligusticum), known for its powerful medicinal properties.

After conducting research, they discovered that the medicinal plant had the effect of unblocking meridians, promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, and expelling wind toxins, so they brought it back to treat patients. Upon seeing the miraculous properties of the plant, Sun Simiao excitedly exclaimed: "Thanh Thành, a faraway place in the world, is the top destination in Western Sichuan. Here, the immortal crane returns, and the good medicine falls from the sky ('thương khung'). This herb shall be called Xuyên Khung!"
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xuyên Khung has a bitter taste, and its nature is dispersing. Its warming property can expel cold pathogens and break up stagnant blood. Its range of treatment is wide, with clear effectiveness in treating headaches. Ancient texts stated, "For headaches, Xuyên Khung must be used." In the Bản thảo Cương mục (Compendium of Materia Medica), it is recorded that Xuyên Khung is a holy herb for treating headaches caused by deficiency of yang, the Jueyin channel, and blood deficiency.
Today, research shows that Xuyên Khung has the effect of calming the central nervous system, dilating peripheral blood vessels, increasing blood circulation in coronary vessels, improving oxygen deficiency in the heart, and has antibacterial properties.
