CAUSES OF COUGH IN CHILDREN
Cough in children can cause sore throat, difficulty breathing, and make the child cry, which affects their ability to study and play. It can even cause the child’s body to become weak, underdeveloped, and grow slowly.
Children can develop a cough due to various reasons such as: common cold, respiratory infections, allergies, asthma, air pollution, or more serious conditions like pneumonia, whooping cough, bronchitis, etc.
Consequences
If the cough persists, it can affect the child’s quality of life, such as: causing the child to wake up during the night, disrupting their sleep, causing stress, anxiety, sadness, and reduced learning ability. So, how should a child with a cough be treated to effectively reduce the cough?
TREATMENT SOLUTIONS
Western Medicine and Treatment Methods
Many people turn to Western medicine to treat a cough, but Western medicine is a "double-edged sword." It works quickly but also comes with many drawbacks. For cases of acute pharyngitis or persistent coughing, Western medicine should be used for immediate relief.
Most Western medicines used to treat coughs in children contain antibiotics, so care should be taken when using them for children, breastfeeding mothers, or the elderly as they may cause unwanted side effects. In particular, antibiotics often lead to digestive disorders in children and can cause other side effects such as gastritis, rickets, stunted growth, and delayed brain development.
Traditional Medicine and Treatment Methods
The principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is to address the root cause of the illness, strengthen the body’s health to increase resistance to disease, because when the body’s vital energy is strong, harmful elements must retreat. Specifically, it focuses on:
Helping the patient expel wind-cold, relieve cold, clear the lungs, and relieve asthma.
Balancing the functions of the three organs: Spleen, Lung, and Kidney.
In TCM, ancestors often used Huang Qi Decoction as a remedy for treating cough in children, which includes precious medicinal herbs such as:
Huang Qi: Sweet taste, warm nature, works on the Spleen and Lung channels. It is used to treat symptoms of lung qi deficiency causing cough, shortness of breath, and chronic bronchitis.
Sang Bai Pi: Sweet, slightly bitter taste, cool nature, has the effect of clearing lung heat, reducing cough, expelling phlegm, and relieving asthma.
Ginseng: Sweet taste, slightly bitter, warm nature, works on the Spleen and Lung channels. It is used to treat asthma caused by lung qi deficiency or both lung and kidney deficiency, leading to shortness of breath.
MTA Cough Syrup for Children is produced using the Huang Qi Decoction formula on a GMP-certified production line, and it is licensed by the Ministry of Health for nationwide distribution. It is very effective for people suffering from coughs, persistent coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, asthma, bronchial asthma, and bronchitis.

HOME REMEDIES WHEN CHILDREN HAVE A COUGH
In addition to applying methods to treat a cough in children, parents should pay attention to the child's diet.
How to Choose Food for Children
When children have a cough, they should eat foods that are high in water content, easy to swallow, and easy to digest but still nutritious, such as soups, porridge, and milk.
Ensure that the child’s diet includes all four food groups: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and vegetables.
Choose foods that are suitable for the child's usual tastes.
You can add garlic, onions, or perilla leaves to the child's meals, as these foods have anti-inflammatory properties, fight viruses, and act as natural antibiotics for treating coughs and sore throats effectively.
Children with a cough should eat foods rich in vitamin A, zinc, and iron, such as beef, chicken, eggs, and green or red vegetables, to boost the body's immunity.
In addition to questions about what children with a cough should avoid and which foods to supplement, parents should also ensure their child drinks enough water, especially for those who have both a cough and a fever. Besides water, you can also offer vegetable or fruit juices to your child.
Things to Avoid:
Do not give children cold foods or drinks.
Limit sugary foods.
Foods high in oil or fats, especially fried foods.
Be cautious when giving children shrimp, crab, fish, or other foods that may cause allergies, such as silkworm larvae or foods that the child has had allergic reactions to in the past.
Do not give children peanuts, melon seeds, or chocolate.
Avoid giving sugarcane juice.
