Nervous exhaustion seems to be a common condition nowadays as the whirlwind of work and life causes the brain to work excessively, while very little time is spent on rest. Although it may seem simple, the consequences of this condition are considered quite complex.
What is nervous exhaustion?
According to a recent survey, in Vietnam, nervous exhaustion accounts for 3-4% of the country's population, while in Western countries, the number is around 5-7%. This figure tends to rise as people face numerous challenges in both their work and daily lives, especially in the modern 4.0 era.
Nervous exhaustion (scientific name: Neurasthenia) is a disorder of the cerebral cortex and certain sub-cortical areas caused by the brain being overworked, affecting its ability to recover and rest, as well as impacting the entire body.
Suy nhược thần kinh đang là căn bệnh phổ biến thời hiện đại
It is not wrong to say that this is a disease of the modern age. While the disease does not directly endanger a person’s life, the system it affects, leading to disruptions throughout the body and a decrease in quality of life, is a serious concern.
Nervous exhaustion and depression are closely related. Nervous exhaustion is a major cause of depression. Depending on the severity, this condition can affect cognition, memory, the brain, and stimulate increased physical activity. If not treated in time and if the person continues to live under non-improving conditions, the direct consequence is the negative impact on daily life, work, and routine activities. Worse still, it can exacerbate other general diseases and even lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior.
Causes of the disease
The number of intellectual workers suffering from this condition is higher than that of manual laborers, mostly between the ages of 20-45, and it tends to be more common in men than women. Some of the causes include:
Stress and tension encountered in daily life and work, accumulating over a long period and consistently impacting the individual every day.
Constant tension and fatigue without time for rest.
External factors like noise, complicated work environments.
Directly impacting diseases such as malnutrition, insomnia, chronic inflammatory diseases like sinusitis, gastric ulcers, etc.

Symptoms of Nervous Exhaustion
People with nervous exhaustion are often characterized by the following signs and symptoms:
Headaches: Persistent, dull headaches that occur day after day, which may affect the entire head or specific areas such as the forehead, top of the head, or temples. The condition may last for several hours or even the whole day, impacting work efficiency, causing insomnia, and leading to fatigue.
Insomnia: Difficulty falling asleep, shallow sleep, and frequent dreams or nightmares, leading to poor-quality rest. As a result, upon waking up, the person feels tired, headachy, and sluggish throughout the day.
Physical manifestations: Neck, shoulder, and back pain, along with lumbar pain. The person may also experience other disturbances like sensory disorders, dizziness, trembling hands and feet, poor memory, rapid heart rate, and urinary irregularities.
Psychiatric symptoms: Increased emotional sensitivity, difficulty controlling emotions and behaviors, irritability, frustration, discomfort, and a tendency to fall into depression.
Types of Nervous Exhaustion
There are three common types of nervous exhaustion:
Hypoactive Type: This type occurs when the person has endured prolonged stress beyond their capacity. They experience a reduction in excitement, lack of interest or desire in activities, accompanied by symptoms of nervous exhaustion.
Intermediate Type: Characterized by mood swings, sometimes feeling excited, other times indifferent. The person may be prone to overthinking, apathy, fear, and anger.
Hyperactive Type: In this type, the person loses control over their emotions and actions. They are easily emotionally triggered but can also experience sudden weakness or exhaustion.
Distinguishing Nervous Exhaustion and Depression
Depression is understood as a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, poor appetite, restless sleep, and a tendency to fall into introspection, feelings of inferiority, and low self-esteem.
Suy nhược thần kinh và trầm cảm có những biểu hiện giống nhau rất khó phân biệt
The common symptoms of nervous exhaustion and depression are quite similar, such as insomnia, loss of appetite, irritability, and fatigue. As a result, many people confuse these two conditions. Here are some key differences:
Feelings of Despair: People with depression always feel hopeless, sad, and inferior in almost every aspect of their life. In contrast, individuals with nervous exhaustion may only feel this way when they are overworked or feel incapable of solving a problem.
Does Nervous Exhaustion Resolve on Its Own? How to Treat It?
Many people wonder if nervous exhaustion can resolve on its own. According to neurologists, it is unlikely to improve on its own if the exhaustion is severe. However, in mild cases, the condition can improve through a balanced diet, proper rest, and a scientific lifestyle.
To determine the appropriate treatment for someone with nervous exhaustion, doctors typically make a diagnosis through psychological assessments, clinical exams, blood tests, heart ultrasound, and by considering the person's typical symptoms.
Psychological Therapies
Psychological therapy involves treatment through verbal or non-verbal methods. In mild cases, it may be as simple as having a conversation with a psychologist about stress, anxiety, and other psychological issues the person is facing. Besides treating nervous exhaustion, this therapy also helps the patient find ways to solve problems in their life.
There are seven types of psychological therapies commonly used:
Conversations, logical explanation, emotional adjustment, and attitude modification
Individual psychotherapy
Group psychotherapy
Occupational therapy
Music therapy
Breathing exercises for relaxation
Meditation and Yoga
Treatment with Western Medicine
Western medicine for nervous exhaustion works by targeting the underlying mechanisms of the disease and the process of stimulating the nervous system. These treatments also help calm the nerves, supplement essential nutrients, and improve brain circulation.
Sử dụng thuốc tây để điều trị suy nhược thần kinh cần được chỉ định từ bác sĩ
Currently, there are several Western medicines that effectively treat nervous exhaustion, including:
Nervous system stimulants: Sulbutiamine, Asthenal (taken after breakfast)
Pain relievers: Paracetamol
Vitamins and dietary supplements for treating body exhaustion
Advantages: These medications directly target the mechanisms of the disease and are based on the symptoms the patient is experiencing. Therefore, they provide fast and effective results.
Disadvantages: Patients may experience some side effects of Western medicines, such as insomnia (with sulbutiamine or asthenal), liver toxicity from high doses of pain relievers, etc.
Supporting the Treatment of Nervous Exhaustion with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), nervous exhaustion is viewed as an imbalance in the heart or liver organ systems, which are linked to the "heart governs the spirit." This imbalance causes symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, and stress. Therefore, TCM treatment focuses on restoring balance in the heart and liver, calming the spirit, moving energy, relieving stagnation, soothing the liver, enriching the blood, and promoting blood circulation.
