People often overlook symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and lightheadedness, attributing them to weather changes, cold exposure, work stress, or general fatigue. However, these are characteristic signs of low blood pressure, a condition that some tend to ignore.
If not addressed properly and promptly, this condition can lead to severe complications such as stroke or even sudden death!
Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure:
People with low blood pressure often experience fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and blurred vision, especially when changing positions.
Other signs include pale skin, cold extremities, difficulty focusing, and irritability.
Nausea may occur, along with a reduced libido, dry and wrinkled skin, hair loss, sweating, and a persistent feeling of coldness.
Shortness of breath and breathlessness are common, especially after activities like climbing stairs or performing strenuous work.
Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure:
Low blood pressure can cause serious consequences, often as severe as those caused by high blood pressure. Many individuals tend to underestimate or lack proper understanding of this condition. Some believe that the symptoms are simply due to poor eating habits or a weak constitution, not realizing that it may be a medical condition and assuming rest will resolve the issue.
Consequences of Low Blood Pressure:
Cardiovascular Issues:
Low blood pressure can lead to severe heart problems, such as heart attacks or angina, which are often overlooked by many.
Repeated episodes of low blood pressure can weaken organs, as vital nutrients and oxygen are unable to reach various body parts, causing damage.
Memory Problems:
The lower the blood pressure, the higher the risk of memory loss. A drop in blood pressure of 10mmHg increases the risk of memory loss by 20%.
Chronic low blood pressure over two years can double the likelihood of developing memory issues.
It can also contribute to cerebral sclerosis, which is a key factor in age-related cognitive decline or dementia.
Balance and Coordination Issues:
Studies show that low blood pressure contributes to balance problems, leading to about 10% of annual fall-related injuries.
It can also cause damage to the inner ear, resulting in hearing loss or even deafness.
Fast Heart Rate and Fainting:
Low blood pressure can lead to a rapid heart rate, dizziness, and fainting, and is a risk factor for stroke.
Around 10-15% of strokes are caused by low blood pressure, while 30% of heart attacks and 25% of heart attacks are also linked to low blood pressure.
Severe Risks:
Sudden and severe drops in blood pressure can lead to shock, particularly dangerous in situations like driving or working at heights.
Prolonged low blood pressure can rapidly weaken organs such as the kidneys, heart, and lungs.
Other Impacts:
Long-term low blood pressure can affect sexual health, cause skin aging with hair loss, and hinder blood circulation, leading to spots and wrinkles on the skin, particularly in women.
Lack of Awareness:
Many people are unaware of their low blood pressure. Studies show that over 70% of patients don’t know they have it, and more than 80% ignore the symptoms.
Importance of Monitoring and Treating Low Blood Pressure:
If left untreated, low blood pressure can lead to dangerous conditions such as shock or organ failure. It’s crucial to monitor and manage the condition effectively to avoid long-term health complications.
Dangerous Complications of Low Blood Pressure
Currently, low blood pressure (hypotension) is not effectively treated in many patients. In Western medicine, treatment typically involves using blood-building products such as iron, folic acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and other supplements intended to increase the number of red blood cells. The assumption is that these synthetic products will nourish the blood, thereby improving the overall health of the body and raising blood pressure. However, the reality is that most of these blood-building products do not achieve the desired therapeutic results.
Limitations of Western Medicine in Treating Low Blood Pressure:
Temporary Relief: Most of the treatments available in Western medicine focus on short-term solutions, such as helping with orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when standing) or acute hypotension. These products may constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure temporarily, preventing fainting, but they do not address the underlying causes of low blood pressure.
Side Effects: These medications come with numerous dangerous side effects, including stomach pain, rapid heart rate, nausea, and excessive stimulation of the central nervous system, leading to insomnia or difficulty sleeping. Prolonged use can lead to dependence or addiction to these medications.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Approach to Low Blood Pressure:
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), low blood pressure is classified under the condition called "Huyễn Vựng", where:
"Huyễn" means dizziness (flowering eyes or blurry vision).
"Vựng" refers to vertigo or a sense of lightheadedness.
The underlying causes of low blood pressure in TCM are often related to Qi deficiency, blood deficiency, or both.
Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency:
The Spleen is considered the foundation for generating Qi and blood. When the Spleen Qi is weak, it fails to nourish the blood, leading to symptoms like dizziness, nausea, fatigue, pale skin, weakness, and a weak pulse.
The Role of Qi in Circulation:
Qi plays a key role in regulating blood flow. When Qi is insufficient or imbalanced, it prevents blood circulation, leading to poor nourishment of the brain, causing dizziness and other related symptoms.
Treatment Strategy in TCM:
The approach to treating low blood pressure in TCM involves tonifying Qi, nourishing blood, and strengthening the Spleen. Treatment focuses on addressing the deficiency of Qi and Blood, regulating the body's Yin and Yang, and harmonizing the relationship between the heart, Spleen, and kidneys.
If the condition is related to the Heart, the treatment would include strategies to strengthen the Spleen, warm the Heart, and regulate the blood flow to support the kidneys and restore balance.
In the acute phase of low blood pressure, TCM treatments often use methods to revive Qi, clear heat, and stimulate blood flow.
In the chronic phase, treatments focus on strengthening the Spleen, nourishing the heart and kidneys, and promoting blood circulation.

Diet to Help Prevent Low Blood Pressure
Once you have a good understanding of what foods to eat for preventing and treating low blood pressure in the long term, doctors may also suggest the following principles when building a meal plan for individuals with low blood pressure:
Drink Plenty of Water Common low blood pressure symptoms like sweating, fatigue, or nausea can lead to dehydration. Therefore, it’s important to drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids and keep your body healthy.
Eat Smaller, More Frequent Meals Eating large meals can increase the risk of low blood pressure because your stomach and body have to work harder to digest heavy meals. Instead of eating three large meals per day, try dividing your meals into six smaller meals. This will reduce the time between meals and help you feel full longer, preventing low blood pressure.
Follow a Low-Carb Diet A low-carb diet emphasizes high-protein foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, while limiting foods rich in starches and sugars. High-protein foods help keep you feeling full for longer and maintain stable blood pressure.
Limit Alcohol Consumption Individuals with low blood pressure often experience dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Drinking alcoholic beverages like beer or wine can exacerbate these symptoms and lead to further dehydration, which can increase the risk of low blood pressure.
Lifestyle Tips to Help Increase Blood Pressure:
Go to Bed Early and Get Enough Sleep
Avoid Sudden Posture Changes
Wear Compression Socks to help improve blood circulation throughout your body.
Avoid Excessive Exercise in extreme heat or direct sunlight.
Do Not Stay in Bed Too Long or sit for long periods at your desk.
Avoid Long Soaks in Hot Tubs or Saunas.
By following these dietary and lifestyle changes, you can help manage and prevent low blood pressure more effectively.
