The rate of colon inflammation in our country is up to 20% of the population, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health, and the rate is increasing rapidly. Therefore, the treatment of chronic colitis is becoming increasingly important.
What causes chronic colitis?
Chronic colitis can occur due to many different causes. However, it is mostly the result of experiencing other colitis-related conditions over a long period.
Here are some reasons why we might develop chronic colitis:
Inadequate treatment of acute colitis: Acute colitis occurs due to parasitic infections, bacteria, fungi, poisoning, etc. If the acute condition lasts for 3 months or more, it may evolve into chronic colitis.
Due to other underlying conditions: If one suffers from other colitis-related diseases such as tuberculosis of the colon, Crohn's disease, etc., and does not treat them early, there is a high risk of developing chronic colitis because the colon lining has been damaged for a long time.
Poor dietary habits: Eating unhygienic food can lead to harmful bacteria infecting the intestines; or eating at irregular hours and in an unscientific manner can disrupt the functioning of the colon, which over time may lead to chronic colitis.
Excessive use of antibiotics: The overuse of Western medicine, especially antibiotics, can erode the lining of the colon and easily lead to inflammation and ulceration.
It is important to address chronic colitis promptly to prevent serious health complications.
Signs of Chronic Colitis
Depending on the cause of the disease and its severity, you may experience different symptoms. However, compared to acute colitis, the symptoms of chronic colitis are generally more severe and persistent.
Here are some common symptoms of chronic colitis:
Abdominal pain: Pain in the left or right lower abdomen. The pain may be dull or severe at times.
Frequent urges to pass stool: A constant urge to strain during bowel movements.
Bowel dysfunction: Frequent urges to pass stool, diarrhea, constipation, or sometimes a combination of both.
Abnormal stools: Mucus-like stools, sometimes with blood.
Additionally, you may also experience systemic symptoms such as: fatigue, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, joint pain, difficulty sleeping, anemia, pale skin, dizziness, etc. Chronic colitis can even lead to memory loss in some cases.
Diagnosis of Chronic Colitis
Similar to diagnosing general colitis, in the chronic stage, doctors will rely on the symptoms to diagnose the disease. The doctor will also review your medical history and your diet and lifestyle habits.
After the initial diagnosis, doctors usually perform a colonoscopy to monitor the level of inflammation and damage. Additionally, they may take a sample for biopsy, which helps to determine the cause of the disease and screen for cancer.
Other tests that may be performed include:
Blood tests
Stool tests
Urine analysis
Abdominal X-ray
CT scan
These tests are important in helping doctors make a definitive diagnosis and create an appropriate treatment plan.
Treatment for Chronic Colitis
Western Medicine Approach
Treatment with Western medicine mainly involves using medications to reduce and control the symptoms.
Antibiotics: Used in cases of bacterial infection to prevent further bacterial spread, and to control digestive and bowel disorders.
Corticosteroids (Anti-inflammatory drugs): Used to reduce inflammation and swelling, typically during the initial stages of treatment.
Anti-parasitic and anti-fungal medications.
Pain relievers and antispasmodics.
These medications help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic colitis.
Surgical Intervention
If a cancerous tumor develops or the disease progresses to a point where it cannot be treated with medication, surgery will be indicated.
Traditional Medicine Approach
According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), chronic colitis and related conditions such as dysentery and abdominal pain are caused by four main factors:
External pathogens (Ngọai tà lục lâm): Infection from external sources.
Irregular diet (Ẩm thực bất điều): Eating habits that are not well-regulated.
Spleen and stomach deficiency (Tỳ vị tố hư): Weakness in the function of the spleen and stomach, which causes long-term health issues.
To effectively treat the disease, it is essential to address the root cause, while simultaneously nourishing and strengthening the spleen and stomach, and harmonizing the liver and stomach. This will help enhance the digestive system's health.
Herbal Formula: Cát căn Hoàng cầm Hoàng liên thang This formula has the function of relieving muscle tension, expelling pathogens, and clearing heat and dampness. The primary herb in this formula is Cát căn, with Hoàng cầm and Hoàng liên acting as secondary herbs to clear heat and dry dampness. Cam thảo is used to harmonize the formula, making it effective for both expelling external pathogens and clearing internal heat, providing a balanced approach for treating the disease.
This herbal formula is used to treat both acute and chronic colitis, as well as digestive disorders.
