After a long and tiring day at work, our bodies need rest to regain balance and recharge. A good night's sleep is also a time for the body’s internal organs to recover. Therefore, sleep is crucial for everyone’s health.
However, due to various reasons, "Insomnia" has become a very common condition in modern life.
There are different types of insomnia: difficulty falling asleep, shallow sleep, waking up and unable to fall back asleep...
According to modern medicine, insomnia is a state of heightened excitement in the brain, which causes difficulty falling asleep, leading to light sleep, frequent awakenings, and vivid dreams.
Main symptoms of insomnia:
Difficulty falling asleep or poor quality sleep, waking up feeling exhausted.
Frequent awakenings during the night.
Difficulty falling back asleep after waking up in the middle of the night.
Feeling fatigued during the day, mood swings, irritability.
Forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating at work.
Consequences of insomnia:
Due to a sleepless night, the individual feels sluggish during the day, has trouble focusing, poor appetite, and some people may experience tinnitus, forgetfulness, hand tremors, and intense head pressure. Irritability is common, and they can easily become frustrated.
According to modern medicine, insomnia is often caused by the following factors:
Insomnia due to underlying medical conditions such as: traumatic brain injury, bone fractures, acute appendicitis, kidney colic, stomach ulcers, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney failure, etc.
Insomnia caused by mental health conditions such as: depression, anxiety, primary insomnia, etc.
Insomnia caused by stress from sadness, disappointment, pessimism, failure in studies, work pressure, or an unhappy marriage.
Insomnia caused by the use of stimulants such as alcohol, beer, cigarettes, and especially strong tea, coffee, etc.
Insomnia is often accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, forgetfulness, and palpitations. The underlying cause of insomnia is often excessive thinking which weakens the heart and spleen, or the deficiency of liver and kidney yin leading to excessive heat, or exhaustion and excessive worry causing heart stagnation, or phlegm-damp stagnation disrupting stomach harmony, leading to unrest.
==> If prolonged, it can lead to memory loss and other related diseases.
The Causes of Insomnia According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Insomnia due to heart and spleen blood deficiency:
Symptoms: Sleeplessness throughout the night or waking frequently, or experiencing vivid dreams and easily waking up, palpitations, forgetfulness, fatigue, poor appetite, pale complexion, a pale and thin tongue coating, and a weak and rapid pulse. This type of insomnia is caused by excessive thinking, which damages the heart and spleen. Blood deficiency prevents the heart from being nourished, causing the spirit to lose its resting place. The spleen's inability to generate blood leads to difficulty in restoring the heart, causing prolonged insomnia.
Insomnia due to liver qi stagnation:
Symptoms: Difficulty falling asleep, tossing and turning, or waking up easily, with a restless mind, dry mouth, dizziness, tinnitus, heat in the palms and soles, a red tongue, and a rapid pulse. This condition is caused by liver qi stagnation, which leads to heat accumulation and disrupts the normal flow of qi, causing restlessness and mental fatigue.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine: The heart governs the spirit, and the liver governs anger. A healthy heart and liver bring mental stability, leading to good sleep. Insomnia is due to imbalance in the heart and liver.
To cure insomnia, it is important to nourish the heart and spleen, soothe the liver, relieve stagnation, and calm the mind.
People who experience insomnia often neglect treatment, leading to long-term fatigue, stress, and a reliance on medication, which can result in dependency and unwanted side effects.
Traditional Remedies for Insomnia: The remedy for treating palpitations, restlessness, and insomnia from the book "Medicinal Plants and Herbs of Vietnam" by Professor-Doctor Đỗ Tất Lợi includes: passionflower, vông leaf, mulberry leaf, and lotus seed. These ingredients include:
Passionflower: Used for treating nervous exhaustion, insomnia, and vivid dreams.
Vông leaf: Calms the mind, used for insomnia.
Mulberry leaf: Disperses wind, clears heat, nourishes the blood.
Lotus seed: Calms the heart, clears heat, used for irritability and insomnia.
The combination of these herbs helps nourish the heart, calm the mind, and support the liver and kidneys.
Thus, this remedy helps individuals restore a normal, natural sleep cycle, waking up feeling refreshed and energized.
After using the product, people with insomnia no longer rely on medication but still enjoy long, deep sleep and better health.
MTA Dưỡng Tâm An Thần – a product made by MTA Pharmaceutical based on this traditional remedy, helps nourish the liver, kidney, spleen, and stomach. It supports effective treatment of insomnia, promotes good digestion and sleep, and leaves individuals feeling rejuvenated with a more youthful and happy life.
In addition, the product also nourishes the heart and spleen, enhancing appetite and improving sleep quality. Symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and balance disorders are improved as well.
In TCM, treating the root cause of the problem while calming the mind, using the principles of tonifying deficiencies, clearing heat, and resolving phlegm, achieves the best results.

Foods to Consume:
Foods rich in B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12...): B vitamins help convert carbohydrates and sugars into energy and support the proper functioning of the nervous system, leading to overall comfort. In people with insomnia, the levels of B vitamins in the blood are usually low. Therefore, foods rich in B vitamins such as brown rice, meat, fish, chicken, milk, butter, eggs, cereals, and leafy greens should be consumed.
Magnesium-rich foods: Insomnia is often a sign of magnesium deficiency, as this mineral helps relax muscles naturally. Foods high in magnesium include spinach, water spinach, amaranth, avocados, almonds, and pumpkin seeds.
Foods high in tryptophan: A deficiency in tryptophan significantly impacts mental health, leading to memory decline, irritability, and insomnia. Tryptophan helps calm the nervous system and induces sleep by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Foods rich in tryptophan include bananas, peanuts, lotus seeds, rice, chicken, and pumpkin.
Foods to Avoid:
Fats such as butter, deep-fried dishes, bacon, cakes, etc. (these foods hinder the synthesis of tryptophan).
Avoid coffee and caffeinated soft drinks like Pepsi, Coca-Cola.
Do not smoke as it disrupts sleep quality.
In addition to a healthy diet, practices such as regular exercise, walking, and avoiding stressful work are also important, as they play a key role in achieving deep and restful sleep.
