Dysentery (Kiết Lỵ)
Dysentery is an infection in the large intestine caused by Entamoeba histolytica or the Shigella bacteria. Most infections are asymptomatic, with some presenting as mild, prolonged diarrhea, or in more severe cases, acute dysentery. Clinical manifestations outside the intestine may include liver abscesses, which can rupture into the peritoneum, pleura, or pericardium.

Dysentery Causes Abdominal Pain
Signs, Symptoms, and Manifestations of Dysentery:
In addition to the main symptoms of blood-stained diarrhea and mucus-filled stool, other symptoms that may occur include:
Abdominal cramps
Nausea
Vomiting
Fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher
Dehydration, if left untreated, can become life-threatening.
Effective Treatment for Dysentery
Treatment with Western Medicine:
For this approach, patients will need consultation and prescriptions from a doctor. It is crucial not to self-prescribe or use medication recklessly, as different stages of the illness require specific medications and dosages. Some commonly used Western medicines for treating dysentery include:
Metronidazole
Tinidazole
Bismuth subsalicylate
Ciprofloxacin
When using these medications, patients must strictly follow the doctor's instructions. Overdosing, missing doses, or suddenly stopping the medication can prevent it from working effectively and may negatively impact health.
Supporting Dysentery Treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Dysentery is an intestinal inflammation caused by dysentery bacteria and amoeba, and it falls under the category of dysentery disorders in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The condition occurs when the body's vital energy (Qi) is weakened, and dampness or damp-heat invades the body, or due to careless eating, causing a disturbance in the spleen and stomach’s ability to transport and transform food.
=> The main method for treating dysentery in TCM: clear damp-heat, resolve stagnation, and regulate Qi and blood. This means when the blood is circulated, the pus will drain out naturally, and when Qi is regulated, the abdominal cramps will subside on their own.
HOÀNG LIÊN - The Best Herb for Treating Dysentery
The Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Classic of Materia Medica) states that Coptis (Hoàng liên) is the most bitter herb among all traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. Its roots and stems contain about 7% berberine. According to TCM, Coptis is a bitter herb with cold properties. The bitterness helps to dry dampness, and the cold property clears heat, making Coptis particularly effective in clearing heat and dampness, especially in the heart and stomach meridians. Clinically, Coptis is used to treat heat-related diseases, damp-heat conditions, diarrhea due to enteritis, and dysentery caused by bacteria, with the primary cause being damp-heat in the large intestine. For centuries, physicians have considered Coptis the best remedy for treating dysentery.
Vị thuốc hoàng liên
Coptis (Hoàng liên) is a small perennial herb, growing to a height of about 30–40 cm. The stem grows upright and branches out at the top. The leaves are arranged alternately from the base upward, with petioles measuring 8–18 cm in length. Each leaf blade has 3–5 leaflets, and the edges of the leaves are serrated.
The root of Coptis is cylindrical, light yellow or brown in color, with numerous small roots that swell into a long tuber resembling a chicken’s foot, which is why it is sometimes called "Hoàng liên chân gà" (chicken-foot Coptis).
Cây hoàng liên
The root of Coptis contains high amounts of berberine, methyl berberine, palmatine, and jatrorrhizine, along with acids such as ferulic acid and chlorogenic acid. The root fibers can contain up to 5% berberine, while the leaves of Coptis chinensis contain between 1.4% and 2.9% berberine.
Broad-spectrum Antibacterial Action: Coptis and its active compounds, like berberine, have strong inhibitory effects on many types of bacteria, such as Shigella (dysentery bacteria) and Escherichia coli (colonic bacteria). The most potent inhibitory action is against Shigella bacteria, which causes dysentery. (According to the Complete Pharmacopoeia of Traditional Medicine, Prof. Dr. Trần Văn Kỳ).
To enhance treatment efficacy and convenience, MTA Hoàng Liên is produced using an application of the Hoàng Liên Thang III formula (from the Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine). The main ingredient is Coptis, combined with Angelica sinensis (Đương quy) for its antibiotic properties against Shigella and Staphylococcus aureus, and Rhizoma Coptidis (Chích thảo) to detoxify, relieve pain, and regulate the effects of the other herbs.
MTA Hoàng Liên is formulated into convenient capsules that are easy to use and not bitter, making it an effective support for treating digestive disorders such as abdominal cramps, frequent bowel movements, and blood in the stool due to dysentery.
