A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an inflammatory condition affecting the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, bladder, and ureters.
The main types of urinary tract infections include cystitis (bladder infection), nephritis (pyelonephritis or kidney infection), and urinary bacterial infections. Cystitis is the most common and typically not serious if treated promptly. However, if the infection spreads to the kidneys, it can lead to more severe conditions. This is particularly true when bacteria develop resistance to common medications, making the condition more painful and harder to treat.
Statistics
According to statistics, women are more likely to develop urinary tract infections (UTIs) than men, with 20–40% of women experiencing this condition at some point in their lives. The prevalence is significantly higher in girls than boys, with a ratio of 5:1.
Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections
Most UTIs involve cystitis (bladder infection). If left untreated, the infection can spread from the bladder to one or both kidneys, leading to nephritis (pyelonephritis), a more severe condition.
Symptoms of Cystitis:
Painful or burning sensation during urination, with a stinging feeling between urinations.
Urgent and uncontrollable need to urinate, frequent urination, or a constant urge to urinate, but with minimal urine output each time.
Lower abdominal pain, burning sensation in the lower abdomen, or bloating and discomfort.
Cloudy urine with a foul odor.
Some individuals may experience no symptoms.
Symptoms of Nephritis (Pyelonephritis):
Pain in one side of the lower back or a sensation of chills running down the spine.
Fever, chills, or shivering.
Nausea and vomiting.
Causes of Urinary Tract Infections From the Perspective of Modern Medicine
UTIs are primarily caused by bacteria invading the urinary tract, leading to infection. These bacteria typically enter through an ascending pathway, starting from the external genitalia and spreading upward to the kidneys. The infection often originates from fecal bacteria in the colon, which contaminate the external genitalia, causing urethritis (urethral infection) and cystitis (bladder infection). If untreated, the infection can spread to the upper urinary tract.
Up to 90% of urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. This bacterium can directly invade the urinary tract through sexual activity, indwelling catheters, endoscopic surgery, or other means.
Other bacteria that may cause UTIs include Klebsiella, Proteus, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Most of these are intestinal bacteria, typically residing in the large intestine, with a small percentage of cases caused by fungi.
UTIs can also result from internal heat, leading to burning, stinging, or painful urination. This condition often recurs in summer or among individuals who frequently consume alcohol, spicy foods, or greasy foods.
Other factors that increase the likelihood of UTIs include urinary tract stones, urine stagnation due to tumors or prostate enlargement, unprotected sexual activity with someone who has a genitourinary infection, and underlying conditions such as diabetes, immunosuppression, aging, or general frailty. UTIs are highly likely to recur if not fully treated.
Sexual activity is a major cause of UTIs, significantly increasing the risk of infection.
From the Perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine
UTIs are caused by external pathogenic factors invading the body, impaired kidney qi transformation, accumulation of damp-heat in the bladder, blood stasis in the lower burner, or obstruction of the urinary pathway, leading to disease.
Complications of Urinary Tract Infections
UTIs, particularly cystitis, are generally not medical emergencies. However, certain groups—such as pregnant women, the elderly, individuals with diabetes, kidney disorders, or weakened immune systems—are at higher risk of complications.
A serious complication occurs when untreated UTIs allow the infection to spread from the bladder to one or both kidneys. When bacteria attack the kidneys, they can cause kidney damage and permanently impair kidney function. In individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions, this can increase the risk of kidney failure. Though rare, the infection can also enter the bloodstream, spreading to other organs.
Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary tract infections are prone to recurrence, so when a patient is diagnosed with this condition, it is important to treat it promptly and thoroughly to prevent it from becoming chronic.
Antibiotic Treatment
The common approach is to use antibiotics that eliminate bacteria. Along with this, proper hygiene must be maintained; otherwise, the infection may worsen and become difficult to treat if it recurs. However, the choice of antibiotic, dosage, and duration of treatment depend on the specific condition of the patient and should be determined only after medical examination and urine test results. Under no circumstances should antibiotics be used without a urine test.
It is essential to use antibiotics correctly and at the prescribed dosage, following a treatment regimen. This helps prevent bacteria from surviving and reactivating under favorable conditions. Especially, if the bacteria develop antibiotic resistance, future treatment will become much more difficult. In such cases, higher doses of antibiotics may be required, which can lead to fatigue and other side effects.
If the UTI is caused by internal heat and dampness (according to traditional medicine), antibiotic treatment is not recommended, as the condition is not due to bacterial infection. Using antibiotics in this case may worsen the symptoms.
Supportive Treatment with Traditional Medicine
In traditional Eastern medicine, UTIs fall under the category of “Lâm Chứng” (urinary syndrome), caused by various factors such as kidney deficiency, heat and dampness in the bladder, overwork, overeating, or an unhealthy lifestyle. Depending on the specific syndrome, different treatment methods and herbal formulas are used. Among them, the herbal formula Bát Chính Tán is commonly applied in treating UTIs.
Bát Chính Tán is an ancient herbal remedy with a long history of use. It works by clearing heat, reducing fire, promoting urination, and relieving urinary discomfort. It is primarily used to treat heat-dampness accumulation in the bladder, symptoms like dribbling urination, short and painful urination, reddish urine, burning sensation in the urethra, and inflammation.
MTA Mộc Thông is a modern herbal product developed based on a modified version of the Bát Chính Tán formula. It helps to clear internal heat, promote urination, and support relief from symptoms such as painful urination, low urine output, reddish and cloudy urine. It helps reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. This product is especially beneficial for individuals at risk of UTIs, with symptoms such as burning urination, frequent urination, and discolored urine.

Prevention of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
To effectively prevent UTIs, maintaining good hygiene is essential to block bacteria that cause infections.
Before and after sexual activity, urinating can help flush out bacteria that might enter the body. After intercourse, it is recommended to drink water and urinate to reduce the risk of bacteria reaching the bladder and urethra. Clean the genital area thoroughly, change sanitary pads frequently during menstruation, and maintain a monogamous relationship. Using condoms is also an important preventive measure, especially in unplanned or one-night sexual encounters.
Drink plenty of fluids daily — ideally 1.5 to 2 liters of water, including filtered water, corn silk tea, or plantain tea — to help dilute urine and flush out bacteria. This is considered an effective way to prevent UTIs. Avoid holding in urine, as stagnant urine creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth and increases the risk of bladder muscle strain and spasms. When urinating, do it slowly and avoid rushing.
Avoid wearing tight clothing or underwear, as it can trap sweat and moisture. Refrain from frequently using unsuitable vaginal douches or products that contain strong alkaline or antiseptic substances.
Supplementing with vitamin C is recommended, as it helps prevent bladder infections. Vitamin C increases the acidity of urine, which inhibits bacterial growth and reduces the number of harmful bacteria in the urinary tract.
It is also helpful to consume certain juices, such as cranberry juice, orange juice, or a combination of orange juice and young coconut water, which promote urination — especially in cases of infrequent urination, UTIs, or other inflammatory symptoms. Other beneficial options include fresh lemon-grape juice, bananas, and melon seeds.
