Support for F0 and post-F0 patients: Reduce cough, sore throat, phlegm, and clear the airways
According to experts, COVID-19 not only affects the health of patients with persistent symptoms and damage to their bodies, negatively impacting health, but also affects work performance (such as the ability to return to work and meet work demands), as well as having social and economic effects.
Among these, cough is a common symptom faced by those experiencing post-COVID syndrome (also known as long COVID). Addressing coughing and clearing phlegm is crucial at this moment for the patient’s rapid recovery.

How does COVID-19 affect a patient's lungs?
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), COVID-19 can lead to a range of symptoms, including cough, fever, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell. Pneumonia is a condition where the small air sacs in the lungs (called alveoli) become infected, which can range from mild to severe. It develops in COVID-19 patients and is referred to as COVID-19 pneumonia.
In severe cases of viral infection, the lungs may experience long-term damage. These symptoms can persist for months or even up to a year before full recovery after COVID-19 treatment. Pneumonia and respiratory infections can cause excessive mucus production, leading to a productive cough.
How to handle excessive mucus in the lungs after COVID-19
If you're struggling to clear mucus from your lungs after acute respiratory infection caused by COVID-19, alongside strictly following your doctor’s treatment plan, additional measures can help reduce the impact of COVID-19 on your respiratory system, clear the airways, and improve lung health:
Using steam inhalation
If excess mucus in the bronchial tubes makes breathing difficult, the patient can use steam inhalation therapy. A few drops of eucalyptus oil can be added to hot water for inhalation, or ginger water can be used to thin the mucus in the nasal passages.
You can also use a specialized nasal irrigation device to remove mucus from the nose. This will help the patient breathe more easily and gradually expel the mucus.
Practicing breathing exercises
According to experts, performing diaphragmatic breathing exercises can help improve lung function and increase lung capacity. The patient should follow these steps:
Relax your face, neck, jaw, and shoulders.
Place the tip of your tongue behind your upper front teeth.
Keep your back straight and close your eyes.
Breathe normally for a few minutes.
Place one hand on your chest and the other on your lower abdomen.
Breathe deeply through your nose, feeling your chest and rib cage expand as you inhale. Your abdomen should rise.
Exhale, gently drawing your abdomen in.
Repeat this slow, deep breathing process 9 to 10 times.
Using health supplements
For individuals who are in the COVID or post-COVID phase, they may choose to use products and health supplements to help reduce mucus in the bronchial tubes.
