Bedwetting is the involuntary urination during sleep at night. It commonly occurs in young children. If adults, particularly women, frequently experience bedwetting, it may indicate certain medical conditions. Depending on the cause, doctors will recommend appropriate treatments for each patient.
Có rất nhiều nguyên nhân gây ra chứng đái dầm ở người lớn.
What is Bedwetting?
Bedwetting (English: Enuresis) is the condition of involuntary urination during sleep at night. This phenomenon is common in children. As children grow older, they typically outgrow bedwetting.
The cause of bedwetting in children is that, at a young age, the bladder and nervous system are not fully developed. As a result, during sleep, a child may urinate multiple times in one night. Diapers are a common solution to manage bedwetting in young children.

Why Do Adults Still Experience Bedwetting?
Bedwetting typically resolves as people grow older. However, if an adult continues to experience bedwetting, it may be due to one of the following medical conditions:
Hormonal Imbalance: The antidiuretic hormone (ADH) reduces urine production. Normally, ADH levels increase before bedtime. In individuals with hormonal disorders, ADH production is reduced, leading to nighttime urination or bedwetting. This is common in patients with diabetes.
Genetic Factors: If both parents had a history of bedwetting, there is a 77% chance the individual may inherit the condition.
Neurological Disorders: These can cause fatigue, deep sleep, or inability to wake up, contributing to bedwetting.
Constipation: This can irritate the bladder, triggering bedwetting.
Urinary Tract Infections: Infections can cause discomfort and frequent urges to urinate, leading to bedwetting during sleep.
Small Bladder Capacity: A smaller-than-normal bladder may not hold urine throughout the night.
Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, sadness, or insomnia can contribute to bedwetting.
Bladder or Prostate Cancer: These conditions may affect bladder control.
Medication Side Effects: Certain medications can cause unwanted side effects, such as increased bladder contractions, leading to frequent urination and potential bedwetting during sleep.
Sexual Abuse or Excessive Sexual Activity: These can also contribute to bedwetting.
However, if bedwetting occurs only occasionally in adults, there’s no need for concern. It may simply be an unfortunate incident caused by extreme fatigue. If bedwetting becomes frequent, you should consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Bedwetting in Women
Some women experience bedwetting, and the first step is to consult a doctor for early treatment. The cause may be related to misaligned reproductive organs affecting the bladder. However, if the patient is in good health, has regular menstrual cycles, and maintains a healthy lifestyle, the condition can often be easily treated. In such cases, bedwetting does not typically impact reproductive health.
Bedwetting in adults is not a highly dangerous condition and can be managed and treated effectively.
How to Treat Bedwetting?
Before treating bedwetting, patients need to be examined to determine the underlying cause. Based on this, the doctor will recommend appropriate treatment options.
Some measures and methods for treating bedwetting in adults include:
Western Medications
Several types of Western medications can help treat or support the treatment of bedwetting:
Antibiotics: One cause of bedwetting is urinary tract inflammation or infection. Antibiotics treat these infections, thereby improving bedwetting symptoms.
Hormone-Balancing Medications: If a patient has a deficiency in the antidiuretic hormone (ADH), the doctor may prescribe Desmopressin Acetate. This medication, taken at night, increases ADH levels to reduce urine production by the kidneys.
Anticholinergic Medications: These drugs reduce bladder muscle stimulation and regulate bladder activity to prevent overactivity.
Medications for Enlarged Prostate: Drugs like Proscar inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, shrinking the prostate gland, improving urine control, and preventing bedwetting.

Surgery
In cases where bedwetting is caused by issues with the bladder, pelvic region, or prostate, a doctor may recommend surgical intervention for treatment.
Some surgical treatment approaches include:
Bladder Smooth Muscle Removal Surgery: If the bladder’s smooth muscles contract excessively, the doctor may remove a portion of these muscles. This reduces urine production and improves bedwetting symptoms.
Bladder Reconstruction: The surgeon inserts a patch of intestinal tissue into the bladder. This method helps stabilize bladder function and improves urine control in patients with bedwetting.
Pelvic Organ Repair Surgery: In some women with bedwetting, the cause is misaligned reproductive organs affecting the bladder. The doctor will surgically reposition these organs to prevent bladder irritation and reduce bedwetting.

Supportive Treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, bedwetting is caused by deficiencies such as weak kidney qi, coldness, or deficiencies in the lungs or spleen. Therefore, treatment focuses on improving kidney qi, addressing lung and spleen deficiencies, and alleviating coldness.
A classic herbal formula includes the following medicinal ingredients: Rehmannia (Thục địa), Dioscorea (Hoài sơn), Achyranthes (Ngưu tất), Psoralea (Phá cố chỉ), Cornus (Sơn thù), Alisma (Trạch tả), Sharpleaf galangal (Ích trí nhân), Mantis egg-case (Tang phiêu diêu), Moutan bark (Đan bì), Poria (Phục linh), and Acorus (Ô dược). This formula supports kidney health and helps alleviate bedwetting. The roles of each ingredient are as follows:
Rehmannia (Thục địa): Nourishes yin, promotes blood health, and strengthens the kidneys.
Dioscorea (Hoài sơn): Tonifies and cools, nourishes the stomach, promotes fluid production, and benefits the lungs.
Psoralea (Phá cố chỉ): Strengthens the life gate fire and stops diarrhea.
Cornus (Sơn thù): Nourishes the liver and kidneys, consolidates, and stabilizes.
Alisma (Trạch tả): Drains dampness, promotes urination, and clears heat.
Sharpleaf galangal (Ích trí nhân): Tonifies the kidneys and spleen, consolidates qi, reduces inflammation, alleviates bladder spasms, and strengthens kidney function.
Mantis egg-case (Tang phiêu diêu): Benefits the kidneys, consolidates essence, and tonifies deficiencies.
Moutan bark (Đan bì): Clears heat, cools the blood, promotes blood circulation, and resolves stasis.
Poria (Phục linh): Promotes urination, drains dampness, calms the mind, and soothes the spirit.
Acorus (Ô dược): Promotes qi flow, relieves pain, strengthens the spleen, aids digestion, warms the kidneys, and dispels cold.
By combining the wisdom of this traditional formula with modern GMP-standard technology, MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company has developed MTA Ôn Thận, a product designed to support kidney health and reduce symptoms of frequent nighttime urination. It is highly effective for adults with frequent nighttime urination and children with bedwetting.
