Chronic Bronchitis
What is Chronic Bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis (chronic bronchial inflammation) is a condition in which the airways in the lungs become inflamed (or prone to irritation). The airways are the passages that carry air into the lungs and are known as the bronchial tree. When these airways are irritated, they increase the production of mucus. This mucus can block the airways and make breathing difficult.
Chronic bronchitis causes symptoms such as coughing with phlegm, difficulty breathing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest.
"Chronic" refers to a condition that lasts for a long time. Chronic bronchitis is defined as inflammation of the bronchial tubes that lasts longer than 3 months. It is often associated with emphysema, and together these two conditions are referred to as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Common Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis
After prolonged inflammation and irritation in the bronchial tubes, chronic bronchitis can develop and lead to several characteristic symptoms, such as: persistent coughing with significant amounts of phlegm. The phlegm is often yellow, green, or white in color.
Ho có đờm là triệu chứng điển hình của viêm phế quản mạn tính
The increased mucus production in the lungs leads to the accumulation of mucus in the bronchial tubes, which obstructs airflow, making it difficult for the patient to breathe. This condition is often accompanied by wheezing and worsens with physical activity.
Other symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include:
Fatigue
Fever
Chills
Bad breath
In the later stages of chronic bronchitis, the skin and lips may become pale due to a lack of oxygen in the blood. A decrease in oxygen levels can lead to swelling in the feet or ankles.
As chronic bronchitis progresses, the symptoms may vary in severity. Coughing episodes may temporarily subside but then recur and intensify. The severity of the condition can be triggered by various factors, including:
Respiratory infections: cold, flu
Systemic infections
Exposure to environmental irritants, dust, smoke, pollution, etc.
Causes of Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis occurs when the bronchial tubes are continuously irritated and inflamed. This persistent condition affects the airways, causing mucus to accumulate and making it harder for air to flow, leading to breathing difficulties and more severe symptoms. The inflammation can also damage the cilia, the tiny hair-like structures that help trap bacteria and germs to prevent them from entering the lungs. If the cilia become ineffective, the airways become more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections.

Infection often causes irritation, swelling, and leads to acute bronchitis. However, due to its impact, it can progress into chronic bronchitis, such as from excessive smoking. Up to 96% of patients with chronic bronchitis have a history of smoking, as the smoke can paralyze and damage the cilia.
In addition to tobacco, other causes such as chemicals, toxic gases, and environmental pollution can also lead to lung infections that cause damage and worsen chronic bronchitis.
SOLUTION FOR TREATING CHRONIC BRONCHITIS
Western Medicine and Treatment Methods
Western medicine treats bronchitis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with bronchodilators combined with antibiotics and corticosteroids. This regimen is effective in treating acute conditions, rapidly stopping attacks, and helping patients avoid danger.
Side Effects:
Only effective in acute conditions; stopping the medication can lead to recurrence of the disease.
The disease gradually worsens and can become unresponsive to medication.
Immune system suppression, liver and kidney failure, and osteoporosis due to long-term corticosteroid use.
Traditional Medicine and Support for Bronchial Asthma Treatment
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the main cause is wind-cold. To treat it, wind-cold must be expelled. The famous doctor Hải Thượng Lãn Ông taught that “To treat a disease, treat the root cause. Treat the root, and all diseases will be cured; treat the branches, and it will only cause confusion.” TCM addresses both the root and the symptoms of the disease, not only curing the disease but also preventing its recurrence.
