Causes of Mouth Ulcers
Mouth ulcers usually begin with a sensation of itching and burning on the mucous membrane inside the cheek, or on the edges or underside of the tongue, gums, lips, floor of the mouth, or roof of the mouth. Afterward, one or more sores form, which may be shallow or deep, with clearly defined borders, and the surrounding mucosa becomes swollen and red. Pain is the hallmark symptom and is always present, often causing discomfort while speaking and chewing food, especially when eating spicy or salty foods. The condition typically lasts for 7 to 10 days and heals on its own, usually without leaving scars. However, mouth ulcers tend to recur, significantly affecting daily activities and work.
Current medical science has not yet definitively identified the exact causes and mechanisms behind mouth ulcers. However, several factors are considered potential causes of the condition, such as:

Causes of Mouth Ulcers
- Nutritional Deficiencies or Improper Diet: Leading to a lack of essential vitamins such as Vitamin C, PP, B6, B12, zinc, etc.
- Hormonal Imbalance in Women: Occurring during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause.
- Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can cause mouth ulcers, especially when the oral mucosa is damaged by sharp teeth or other objects.
- Digestive Disorders, Genetic Factors, and Stress: Additionally, certain medications can also contribute to mouth ulcers.
Treatment Approach in Traditional Medicine (TCM)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), mouth ulcers are referred to as "Khẩu sang" (oral sores). The term "Khẩu sang" first appeared in the Nei Jing, the oldest classical medical text of TCM over 2,000 years ago. Later medical texts also referred to the condition by various names such as "Khẩu dương," "Khẩu phá," "Khẩu cam," "Khẩu vẫn sang," and "Nha sang."
According to TCM, Khẩu sang is a localized condition (confined to the oral cavity) but is related to the functioning of internal organs, especially the heart and spleen:
- Heart-Spleen Heat Accumulation (Tâm Tỳ Tích Nhiệt):
- This condition is often the cause of mouth ulcers as the heart is connected to the tongue (the orifice of the heart), and the spleen is connected to the mouth.
- Symptoms include numerous mouth ulcers of varying sizes, yellowish fluid on the ulcer surface, red and swollen surrounding mucosa, burning pain, accompanied by restlessness, insomnia, bad breath, thirst, constipation, and yellow urine. The tongue is red with a yellow coating, and the pulse is rapid (over 90 beats per minute).
- Yin Deficiency with Excess Heat (Âm Hư Hỏa Vượng):
- This condition occurs when the body's yin fluids are depleted, leading to an imbalance where "empty heat" rises, causing mouth ulcers.
- Symptoms include fewer ulcers (usually 1-2), recurrent outbreaks, pale white sores, slightly swollen or non-red surrounding mucosa, a dry red tongue with little coating, and a rapid, thin pulse.
MTA Tam Hoàng Giải Độc is formulated based on the traditional prescription "Tam Hoàng Giải Độc" (from Thuốc Nam Thuốc Bắc và các phương thang chữa bệnh, page 259), designed to clear heat, cool the blood, and detoxify through the following herbal ingredients:
- Hoàng Liên: Clears heat and dampness, clears the heart, relieves irritability, and detoxifies.
- Hoàng Bá: Clears heat and dampness, nourishes yin, descends fire, and detoxifies.
- Hoàng Cầm: Clears heat, dries dampness, and detoxifies.
- Chi Tử: Clears heat, relieves irritability, promotes urination, cools the blood, and stops bleeding.
MTA Tam Hoàng Giải Độc is highly effective in treating conditions like mouth ulcers, swelling and pain in the mouth, bad breath, bleeding gums, and the discomfort of heat-related conditions such as restlessness, irritability, insomnia, and confusion.

How to Prevent Mouth Ulcers
Mouth ulcers are generally benign and can heal on their own within 1-2 weeks. However, enduring the pain and discomfort for an extended period is not easy. You can follow these preventive measures to reduce the appearance of ulcers:
- Avoid irritant foods: Fruits with high acidity such as pineapple, grapefruit, oranges, or lemons. Also, avoid nuts, fried potatoes, or spicy foods.
- Limit talking while eating: This helps reduce accidental biting of the mouth.
- Manage stress: Stress can contribute to mouth ulcers, so it's important to relax and reduce tension.
- Maintain good oral hygiene: Use dental floss daily and brush your teeth after meals to ensure cleanliness.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: A soft brush helps prevent irritation of the gums and mouth. You can also use a mouthwash containing sodium lauryl sulfate to reduce irritation.
