What is Constipation? Causes and Symptoms
Constipation is one of the most common health issues, affecting people of all ages, from children to the elderly.
Causes of Constipation
In addition to causes such as tumors, lumps, or polyps in the rectal area, constipation is most commonly caused by secondary factors that are often related to daily living habits and diet, such as:

Older Adults and Constipation
Older adults are more susceptible to constipation for the following reasons: poor diet and inadequate water intake, lack of exercise, side effects of medications, and poor bowel habits.
Consequences of Constipation
A person with constipation has at least two of the following symptoms:
- Having fewer than three bowel movements per week.
- Difficulty during bowel movements.
- Hard stools.
- A feeling of blockage in the rectum.
- A sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation.
- The need to use hands to assist during bowel movements.
If not treated in a timely manner, constipation can lead to troublesome consequences for the individual in daily life.

TREATMENT METHODS FOR CONSTIPATION
Constipation is not a difficult disease, but it can cause significant discomfort and affect daily life, including work and health.
Western Medicine Treatment
In Western medicine, constipation is considered a symptom of a disease. The treatment mainly involves improving the diet and using medications that increase absorption, stimulate intestinal movement, act as laxatives, or soften stools to help with defecation. The advantage of Western medications is their quick effects, providing immediate relief.
Side Effects:
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea, loose stools, potential loss of control over bowel movements
- Loss of natural bowel reflex, potentially worsening the condition
- Prolonged use can lead to dehydration, affecting digestion and nutrient absorption
- Tolerance to the medication, requiring higher doses over time
Traditional Medicine Support for Constipation
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), constipation is caused by deficiencies in Qi and blood, heat accumulation in the large intestine, internal heat from yin deficiency, or improper eating habits.
Unlike Western treatments, which may lead to side effects with long-term use, Traditional Medicine remedies do not carry such risks. Many TCM prescriptions help to promote bowel movements effectively while also clearing heat, detoxifying, and treating the root cause of the condition.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Herbal Ingredients:
- Thục địa: Nourishes Yin, invigorates blood, mainly for kidney Yin deficiency and constipation.
- Đảng sâm: Tonifies the middle, increases energy, generates body fluids, and relieves thirst.
- Hoài sơn: A tonifying herb that strengthens the spleen and stomach.
- Đương quy: Helps with smooth bowel movements and treats constipation.
- Thăng ma: Expels wind, detoxifies, and promotes Yang Qi.
- Mạch môn: Moistens the intestines, promotes fluid production, and relieves constipation.

- Liên nhục: Nourishes the spleen, kidneys, and heart, has a calming effect.

It is effective for those suffering from constipation, particularly chronic constipation. The product is licensed by the Ministry of Health and is available nationwide.
