At the conference held by the Association for Diabetes Control in response to "World Health Day" in Hanoi, statistics revealed that within just 10 years, the number of people with diabetes in Vietnam has surged by 200%, making diabetes the fourth leading cause of death. With the alarming rise in diabetes prevalence, it is crucial for every individual to understand what diabetes is, its causes, and treatment methods to adopt the right approach toward this serious condition.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, is a common disease in modern society with a steadily increasing incidence each year. According to researchers, it is estimated that by 2030, approximately 500 million people worldwide will be affected by diabetes.
Diabetes is a condition in which the body’s ability to produce or utilize insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, is impaired. Insulin is responsible for converting carbohydrates into glucose and storing it in the liver and adipose tissue.
In individuals with diabetes, the body either does not produce insulin or cannot effectively use it to metabolize and store glucose. As a result, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
In healthy individuals, blood sugar levels typically range between 90–130 mg/dL. If your blood sugar consistently exceeds this range, it indicates abnormally high blood glucose levels. A blood test to measure blood glucose levels is the standard method for diagnosing diabetes.
Types of Diabetes
Diabetes is classified into three main types:
Type 1 Diabetes: This occurs when the body’s immune system malfunctions and attacks the pancreatic cells responsible for producing insulin. As a result, the pancreas becomes damaged, leading to a significant reduction in insulin production. This causes blood sugar levels to rise uncontrollably.
Type 2 Diabetes: This type develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not use it effectively. Initially, the body’s cells resist insulin’s action, and the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Over time, this leads to an insulin deficiency, resulting in diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes: This type occurs exclusively in women during pregnancy. After childbirth, the condition typically resolves on its own.
Causes of Diabetes
The fundamental cause of diabetes is a deficiency in insulin production, a complete cessation of insulin production, or the body’s inability to utilize insulin effectively. However, what leads to this insulin dysfunction? These underlying factors can be considered the root causes of diabetes.
The specific causes vary depending on the type of diabetes:
Causes of Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes typically affects children and adolescents. The causes include:
Genetic predisposition inherited from previous generations.
Vitamin D deficiency.
Exposure to viruses that disrupt the immune system.
Causes of Type 2 Diabetes
The causes of type 2 diabetes include:
Obesity.
Genetic factors.
A diet high in sugar and fat.
Impaired glucose absorption.
High blood pressure.
Cultural and environmental factors, such as dietary habits and lifestyle.
The causes of type 2 diabetes are obesity, overweight, genetics, etc.
Causes of gestational diabetes
During pregnancy, the mother's placenta often secretes some substances that can resist the hormone insulin. Therefore, many pregnant women develop diabetes.
Another group of women who do not develop diabetes during pregnancy is because the pancreas produces high levels of insulin, which helps to resist insulin-resistant cells. Therefore, they do not develop diabetes during pregnancy.

Complications of Diabetes
Diabetes can lead to numerous serious complications, including:
Nerve Damage: Itching, numbness, burning sensation, or muscle pain.
Cardiovascular Diseases: Heart attack, angina, arterial narrowing, or stroke.
Foot Damage: Ulcers or infections in the lower extremities.
Eye Damage: Reduced vision, cataracts, glaucoma, or even blindness.
Kidney Damage: Leading to kidney failure.
Hearing Loss: Impaired auditory function.
Alzheimer’s Disease: Particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Methods for Treating Diabetes
Individuals with diabetes require timely treatment to slow disease progression and prevent complications. However, diabetes cannot be completely cured; treatment focuses on controlling blood sugar levels.
Below are some of the most common methods for treating diabetes:
Medical Treatment
The core issue in diabetes is the body’s inability to produce sufficient insulin, which prevents the metabolism of glucose into cells, the liver, or adipose tissue for storage. As a result, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, causing the disease. Therefore, diabetic patients often require medications to supplement insulin or lower blood sugar levels.
When prescribing insulin, doctors assess the patient’s condition and may recommend oral medications or insulin injections. Patients may also use additional medications to address complications such as cardiovascular issues, kidney problems, or skin infections.
When using insulin for diabetes treatment, patients must strictly follow the doctor’s instructions.
Traditional Medicine Support for Diabetes Treatment
In Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese Medicine, there is no specific term for “diabetes mellitus,” but based on clinical symptoms, the condition is categorized under the syndrome known as “tiêu khát” (wasting-thirst syndrome). This condition primarily arises from factors such as genetics, improper diet, neurological stress, chronic infections, inappropriate medication use, excessive indulgence in alcohol or sexual activity, or overexertion. These factors disrupt the functions of the body’s organs, particularly the spleen (tỳ), lungs (phế), and kidneys (thận), leading to the development of tiêu khát. Additionally, excessive consumption of rich, fatty, and indigestible foods can impair the spleen and stomach, hindering their ability to process and transport food. This results in stagnation, which over time generates internal heat, depleting yin fluids and triggering the onset of the disease. Prolonged emotional stress can also impair the liver (can), causing stagnation of liver qi that transforms into fire. This fire damages the yin fluids of the lungs and stomach above and the kidneys below, ultimately leading to tiêu khát, or diabetes.
Dây Thìa Canh (Gymnema sylvestre)
The primary bioactive compound in Dây thìa canh is Gymnemic Acid, which has multiple mechanisms to support diabetes management:
Stimulates Insulin Secretion: Enhances insulin production by the pancreas.
Inhibits Glucose Absorption: Reduces the absorption of glucose in the intestines.
Decreases Hepatic Glucose Production: Lowers the production of new glucose in the liver.
Enhances Glucose Utilization: Improves glucose uptake and utilization in tissues and muscles.
These actions collectively reduce blood glucose levels, maintaining them at safe levels without causing hypoglycemia when blood sugar is already stable. Beyond lowering blood sugar, Dây thìa canh has been proven to stabilize and maintain safe blood glucose levels over extended periods. With 3–6 months of use, the HbA1c level (a key indicator of long-term blood sugar control) decreases significantly, and blood glucose levels are sustained within a safe range.
Integration with Lục Vị Địa Hoàng Hoàn (Liuwei Dihuang Wan)
The traditional formula Lục Vị Địa Hoàng Hoàn (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is a classic remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine used to nourish yin and tonify the kidneys, addressing deficiencies that contribute to tiêu khát. It typically includes herbs such as Rehmannia glutinosa (Thục địa), Cornus officinalis (Sơn thù), and Dioscorea opposita (Hoài sơn), which complement the blood sugar-regulating effects of Dây thìa canh by supporting overall metabolic balance and organ function.
MTA Thanh Đường Product
Developed by MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company, Thanh Đường combines the benefits of Dây thìa canh with the principles of Lục Vị Địa Hoàng Hoàn. Its key actions include:
