Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis, also known as rheumatoid polyarthritis, is a chronic condition caused by an autoimmune disorder, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. This disease leads to inflammation (redness, swelling), causing pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints, mainly affecting the hands, back, feet, and knees. Rheumatoid arthritis not only damages and harms the joint system but can also affect other systems of the body, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.
Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Some causes of rheumatoid arthritis include:
Genetics: Many studies have shown that individuals with a family history of rheumatoid arthritis are at 2-3 times higher risk of developing the disease compared to those from normal families.
Immune system disorders: A weakened immune system allows harmful viruses and bacteria to invade the body, triggering inflammatory responses in the joints, which leads to infection.
Gender and age: Research shows that women are at a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis than men, particularly women over the age of 30.
Unhealthy lifestyle: Regularly engaging in heavy work, lifting heavy objects, or improper posture while working or resting can lead to rheumatoid arthritis.
Substance abuse: Frequent consumption of alcohol, beer, tobacco, and other stimulants weakens the body’s immune system, increasing the risk of disease.
Injuries: Damage caused by accidents or impacts to the joints that isn’t properly treated can result in joint inflammation and infection.
There are many causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Timely treatment of rheumatoid arthritis helps to minimize complications caused by the worsening of the disease. Currently, there are diverse treatment methods, including Western medicine, traditional medicine, combined with exercises and changes in daily habits.
Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis with Western Medicine
Depending on the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, the doctor will prescribe the most suitable medication. Some types of pharmaceutical drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis at different stages include:
Mild stage: When the disease just begins with symptoms like joint pain but still allows easy movement, common pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, paracetamol, are recommended.
Moderate stage: When joints show signs of inflammation and movement becomes limited, glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory drugs should be used.
Severe stage: When rheumatoid arthritis becomes severe, making it difficult to walk, high-dose corticosteroids, methotrexate, and other medications are prescribed..

Support Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis with Traditional Medicine
Rheumatoid arthritis and chronic musculoskeletal diseases in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are known as "Chứng Tý."
According to TCM theory, the body's defensive energy is insufficient, allowing pathogenic factors (wind, cold, dampness, heat) to invade the tendons, muscles, bones, joints, and meridians, causing a blockage in the circulation of Qi and blood, leading to symptoms like swelling, heat, redness, and pain in the joints.
In elderly individuals, or those suffering from long-term illness, the deficiency of Qi and blood leads to weakness in the liver and kidneys. The kidneys fail to nourish the bones and marrow, while the liver blood deficiency cannot support the tendons and muscles, resulting in joint degeneration, deformation, muscle atrophy, and joint stiffness.
Thus, the TCM approach to treating joint diseases focuses on promoting the circulation of Qi and blood in the tendons, muscles, and joints, expelling pathogenic factors (wind, cold, dampness, heat), tonifying Qi and blood, and nourishing the liver and kidneys to prevent relapse, counteract degeneration, deformation, muscle atrophy, and joint stiffness, with the goal of restoring normal joint function.
The traditional remedy contains valuable herbs such as Xuyên Khung (Ligusticum), Tỳ Giải (Pueraria), Đan Sâm (Salvia), Bạch Chỉ (Angelica), Ý Dĩ (Coix), Ngũ Gia Bì (Acanthopanax), Cỏ Xước (Achyranthes), and Quế Chi (Cinnamon), which have the following effects:
Xuyên Khung: Has the effect of expelling wind, relieving pain, and is used to treat wind-damp pain and fatigue.
Đan Sâm: Tonifies blood, promotes blood circulation, reduces swelling, and relieves pain, used for treating swollen and painful joints.
Tỳ Giải: Expels wind-dampness and is used to treat pain in the lower back, knees, and tendons.
Bạch Chỉ: Expels wind, relieves pain, and is used to relax muscles.
Ý Dĩ: Treats muscle and tendon stiffness, and helps with long-term wind-damp conditions that have not resolved.
Ngũ Gia Bì: Strengthens the tendons and bones, expels wind and transforms dampness, commonly used to treat lower back pain, numb legs, and strengthen the bones.
Cỏ Xước: Promotes blood circulation, expels stagnation, nourishes the liver and kidneys, and strengthens bones. It is used for treating wind-damp conditions, back pain, joint pain, and muscle cramps.
Applying the essence of this traditional remedy, MTA Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company has produced MTA Xuyên Khung Xương Khớp, which supports the relief of joint pain, reduces the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and is highly effective for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, difficulty moving, and swollen joints that are not hot or red..
