Traditional Medicine for Persistent Cough and Phlegm
A dry or phlegm-filled cough is often a symptom of respiratory diseases such as sore throat, tonsillitis, or bronchitis. These diseases can occur at any age but are particularly common in children. One major drawback of Western medicine is that many medications cannot be used for young children and often come with unwanted side effects. To address these issues, many people, especially mothers, now turn to traditional medicine to treat persistent dry or phlegmy coughs.
The principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses on balancing the body's internal energy and eliminating the root causes of the illness, ensuring more effective and complete recovery, while minimizing the chances of recurrence. TCM products designed to relieve cough must meet two criteria: addressing the symptoms (relieving the cough, reducing inflammation, and soothing the throat) and treating the root causes (such as issues with the liver, kidneys, lungs, or vital energy).
An ancient remedy includes herbs such as:
Mạch môn: Nourishes Yin, benefits the stomach, and generates fluid
Cát cánh: Clears lung congestion, expels phlegm, and helps with asthma, chest tightness, and lung abscesses
Sinh địa: Nourishes Yin, clears heat, and generates blood
Thiên môn: Relieves dry cough, phlegm, and thirst
Thổ bối mẫu: Treats dry cough due to lung heat, bloody coughs, and tuberculosis-related cough
Cam thảo: Strengthens the spleen and energy, moistens the lungs, and relieves coughing
Ngũ vị: Treats chronic asthma and persistent cough
Tang bạch bì: Strengthens the liver and kidneys
Trúc diệp: Clears heat and relieves discomfort
Sinh khương: Expels cold, warms the middle, relieves phlegm, and detoxifies
Tử uyển: Treats phlegm and cough caused by wind-cold or lung heat
The MTA Bổ Phế Syrup is produced from this traditional formula, manufactured on a GMP-standard production line. It is effective for relieving coughs, clearing phlegm, and soothing sore throats caused by prolonged coughing. It is especially beneficial for dry coughs, phlegm-filled coughs, sore throats, and coughs due to weather changes. The product is approved by the Ministry of Health and is available nationwide.

WHAT TO EAT WHEN YOU HAVE A COUGH?
According to health experts, the following foods are very beneficial for those struggling with coughing:
Soups, thin porridge, and milk: These foods contain just enough water, are soft, easy to swallow, and easy to digest while still providing all the necessary nutrients for the patient.
Softly cooked or minced beef and pork, and vegetables with green or red colors like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes: These meats and vegetables are rich in Vitamin A, zinc, and iron, which are beneficial for the patient's recovery.
Fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, pineapples, guavas, mangoes, apples: These fruits are high in Vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system and detoxify the body to fight off illnesses. It’s best to eat these fruits about 1 hour after meals, as eating them on an empty stomach may irritate the stomach.
Certain shellfish, like clams and oysters, which are rich in zinc, can also help strengthen the immune system.
Cough lozenges with mint flavor can help soothe the throat and clear the nasal passages. However, they should not be overused, especially for cases of sore throat with redness.
Honey with a few slices of lemon or kumquat is recommended for those with a cough or sore throat. After breakfast, the patient can suck on 1-2 teaspoons of honey or drink a cup of warm honey-lemon water. This mixture is excellent for its antibacterial properties and helps alleviate the cough.
