Bronchitis is a respiratory condition where the lining of the bronchi becomes inflamed, leading to thickening and narrowing or blockage of the smaller bronchioles. This causes difficulty breathing, coughing, and may be accompanied by thick mucus.
Common Symptoms of Bronchitis
For acute or chronic bronchitis, the signs and symptoms may include:
Mucus in the throat, which can be clear, white, yellowish-gray, or green
Difficulty breathing, especially when exerting effort
Wheezing
Fatigue
Fever and chills
Chest tightness
Complications of Bronchitis
According to experts:
Bronchitis can be cured if detected early and treated promptly. However, if not fully treated or treated incorrectly, the condition can recur frequently and may develop into chronic bronchitis, leading to serious complications in the respiratory system.
Common Treatments for Bronchitis
Western Medicine Treatments for Bronchitis:
Many patients with bronchitis believe that only antibiotics can cure the disease. However, this is a misconception, as antibiotics are only effective for bronchitis caused by bacterial infections.
Some commonly prescribed medications for bronchitis include:
Expectorants: Help thin mucus and expel it when coughing.
Anti-inflammatory medications containing corticosteroids, either in oral, nebulized, or inhaled form.
Antibiotics: Depending on the condition and the patient's individual situation, antibiotics may be prescribed. Common ones include ceftriaxone, augmentin, benzylpenicillin, etc.
Antiviral medications: Typically used for treating flu virus-related bronchitis.

Note: Western medicines for treating bronchitis contain various pharmacological ingredients, so patients should consult with a doctor before using any medication. Improper dosage or overuse of Western medicine can lead to dangerous complications, such as drug resistance, liver damage, gastric ulcers, etc.
Supporting Bronchitis Treatment According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Principles
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) categorizes bronchitis under the conditions of "Khái Thấu" (Coughing) and "Đàm Ẩm" (Phlegm Dampness). According to TCM, the external causes of the disease are primarily due to the invasion of pathogenic factors like wind-cold or wind-heat, which obstruct the lung qi, disrupting its function of ascending and descending. This leads to symptoms like coughing and excessive phlegm. Additionally, during autumn, the dryness (táo tà) from the environment may harm the lung's fluids, resulting in throat itching and dry coughing.
Internally, TCM attributes bronchitis to weakened function of the lungs, spleen, and kidneys. Cold-dampness damages the spleen, creating phlegm, which leads to coughing and phlegm production. Excessive heat in the stomach can damage the lungs, and the deficiency of lung and kidney yin may result in damage to both qi and bodily fluids, leading to cough and phlegm.
Prescription: Bát Vị Địa Hoàng Hoàn (Eight-Treasure Rehmannia Pill) with Modifications
This prescription is effective in tonifying the kidneys, strengthening the spleen, and benefiting the lungs, which helps treat chronic bronchitis. The ingredients include:
