Causes of Asthma in Children
Experts believe that asthma is a common condition across all age groups, particularly among children and the elderly. The disease is caused by various factors, or a combination of multiple factors, with allergens being the most common trigger.
Common Triggers of Asthma in Children
Consequences of Asthma in Children
The disease progresses in acute episodes, and after each episode, the condition tends to worsen and become more dangerous. In some cases, when the disease recurs frequently and the inflammatory infection in the bronchi is not treated, it creates favorable conditions for the disease to progress, leading to many serious complications such as:
Bronchial infections.
Collapsed lungs.
Chronic pulmonary heart disease.
Pneumothorax and mediastinal emphysema.
Emphysema with multiple lobes.
Respiratory arrest and respiratory failure.
Treatment Solutions
Western Medicine:
Typically, heavy antibiotics, strong anti-inflammatory medications, powerful cough suppressants, bronchodilators, comprehensive supplements, and fever-reducing and pain-relieving medications are prescribed.
However, do you know the dangerous side effects of the pharmaceutical drugs you are using daily?
There are hidden risks that patients often ignore, such as:
Gastric and duodenal ulcers, which can lead to severe stomach bleeding.
Bone deterioration and bone brittleness. Children may experience rickets, slow growth, and delayed brain development.
Edema, kidney failure, and, in severe cases, the need for dialysis.
Liver failure, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and elevated liver enzymes.
Rapid heart rate, palpitations, and tremors in the hands and feet.
Immune system suppression, which reduces the bronchial resistance and overall body immunity, leading to a significant reduction in the elasticity of the bronchi.
=> As a result, the disease can become more prolonged.
Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) suggests: “To eliminate the disease, one must address the root cause.”
The benefits of treating asthma with TCM include:
Root cause elimination.
Safety with no side effects.
Nourishing and boosting the body’s immunity.
Asthma is not just a respiratory issue; it is a systemic disease with manifestations in the respiratory tract, characterized by bronchial spasms and increased mucus secretion. The goal of TCM is to treat the whole body, restore balance, and increase the body's resistance, while also focusing on eliminating the cause of the disease to effectively cure asthma.
Thus, the general principle of treating asthma here is “Tonify the right (body’s energy) and expel the evil (pathogens).” The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor clearly states: “When the evil forces act upon the body, if the right energy is insufficient, the body becomes unwell.” After addressing the acute asthma attack, the next step is to continue “tonifying the right energy,” strengthening the body, and boosting immunity to prevent asthma recurrence despite environmental challenges.
Xạ Can decoction, a traditional remedy used by ancestors to treat children with severe cough, asthma, and throat issues, includes the following precious herbs:
Xạ Can: Bitter in taste, cool in nature, acting on the lungs and liver meridians, it helps with phlegm removal and is a valuable remedy for treating amygdalitis, phlegm-heavy cough, and hoarseness.
Tử Uyển: Bitter and spicy in taste, warming in nature, it affects the lung and heart meridians. It helps to dispel cold, moisten the lungs, resolve phlegm, and stop coughing, often used for asthma, excessive phlegm, bloody coughs, sore throat, and both acute and chronic bronchitis.
Sinh Khương: Spicy, aromatic, and warm in nature, it treats colds, wind-cold, and productive coughs.
The MTA Hen Children’s Syrup is based on the Xạ Can decoction and is produced using GMP-certified processes, licensed by the Ministry of Health, and distributed nationwide. It is used as a supportive treatment for those with chronic coughs, difficulty breathing, wheezing, asthma, bronchial asthma, and bronchitis.
Treatment Regimen
10-30 days: This is the stage where the cold-damp pathogens are being expelled. At this point, the medicinal herbs are attacking the lung system, and the body produces more mucus in preparation for expelling all the phlegm from the body.
30-60 days: The phlegm is eliminated, the airways are cleared, and symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath no longer occur.
After 60 days: The medicinal herbs support nourishment and enhance the function of the lungs, kidneys, and digestive system, helping asthma patients eat well, sleep well, gain weight, and no longer suffer from weakness caused by asthma.
Combining with other products for higher effectiveness.

Home Solutions for Asthma
In addition to applying asthma treatments for children, mothers should also pay attention to the child’s diet.
A diet for children with asthma should include:
Magnesium-rich foods: Magnesium helps relax the muscles surrounding the airways, which is beneficial for those with asthma. Therefore, mothers should ensure to add magnesium-rich foods such as leafy greens, whole grains, tomatoes, milk, and beans (if the child isn’t allergic) into the child’s daily meals.
Omega-3: Omega-3 helps enhance the child’s immune system, prevents asthma attacks, and boosts respiratory function. You can supplement omega-3 in your child’s diet through fish like mackerel and salmon, vegetables, nuts, and omega-3 oils.
Vitamin C: Research shows that children with asthma have 50% less vitamin C compared to children without the condition. Supplementing with vitamin C can help reduce airway obstruction and alleviate asthma symptoms in children. You can supplement vitamin C through fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, and leafy greens.
Honey: Honey contains natural antibacterial properties that can reduce inflammation and thin mucus, making it easier to expel. This helps prevent asthma attacks and strengthens the child’s respiratory function. To use, mix 1 teaspoon of honey (adjust based on the child’s age; older children can take more) with warm water for daily consumption.
Vitamin E-rich seeds and nuts: These help reduce wheezing symptoms (at least 3 times a week).
What to avoid:
The risk of triggering an asthma attack is very high if the child eats foods to which they are allergic. Depending on the child’s allergy profile, parents should avoid foods that the child has previously shown signs of being allergic to. Additionally, avoid the following foods:
Foods high in salt and deep-fried foods: It’s best to eat foods that are low in salt to avoid water retention and exacerbate breathing difficulties. Aim for less than 6g of salt per day.
Carbonated drinks
Foods with too many spices, salads, pickled vegetables, or processed foods such as canned food and dried fruit.
