TREATMENT METHODS FOR PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE
Western Medicine Approach
Peptic ulcer disease occurs when the stomach lining is damaged by gastric acid. It is a common disease both globally and in Vietnam, characterized by chronic conditions and high recurrence rates.
Treatment is based on the cause and typically includes:
Antibiotics (for H. pylori infections)
Acid-neutralizing agents
Acid secretion inhibitors
Mucosal protective agents
Disadvantages of Western Medicine:
High recurrence rate
May cause appetite loss and indigestion
Traditional Medicine Approach
In Traditional Oriental Medicine (TOM), peptic ulcers fall under the category of “Vị Quản Thống” (stomach pain), caused by emotional stress affecting liver energy, irregular diet, or congenital weakness (deficiency in kidney or spleen energy). These imbalances disrupt digestive harmony and cause symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, belching, acid reflux, etc.
Traditional treatment focuses on the root causes, aiming to improve appetite and sleep while providing sustainable healing. Key medicinal herbs used include:
Lá khôi (Ardisia leaf) – Main herb: soothes liver, reduces inflammation, antibacterial
Cam thảo (Licorice root) – Harmonizing herb: strengthens the spleen and balances the formula
